Wife and I, 68 and 70 fancy spending a couple of weeks in Bulgaria late September/October ish.
We are both fairly active (she says I'm fat) but we have no interest in sunworship, swimming or beachs. We would ideally like to be near a waterfront/marina, with trip access to history and places of interest, with evening stroll areas.
We have never been before and the various guide books don't quite answer our questions. What I'd like is for some kind member here, who knows the country to say "don't go to A, B or C, but X, Y and Z would be okay" Generally when travelling elsewhere (we are quite seasoned travellers) we stay at UK standard 4 star hotels.
Any help will be appreciated - thanks
David.
Late September/October can be unpredictable weather-wise and you will possibly be restricted to (somewhat limited) scheduled flights with either BA or Bulgaria Air that late in the tourist season.
I'm not a beach/resort person either, so would suggest looking at somewhere like Varna, which should meet most of your requirements. Burgas could be a possible alternative, but Burgas Airport tends to be a 'summer-season-only' airport and is virtually operated for internal flights only during the off-season months.

My parents went on a coach tour a couple of years back in September. They loved it. Their tour did not involve coastal resorts. The weather will be unpredicable late September.

I agree with Fiona. Go on a coach tour if some of these sights are in included. But these sights are not close to the sea.
I recommend you look at Balkan Holiday 'Spice of Life' programmes, and in particular the Grand Hotel Varna at St Konstantin - HERE.
It won't fulfil all your requirements, but there's plenty of history in Varna with its Roman baths and artefacts from ancient Odessos in the Archeological Museum
Not late September/October though. It can be quite cold with very few shops, restaurants and bars open.
