Sorry - do I understand you right? Taking £400 cash plus £1200 in TCs?
Are you renting the apartment or buying it?

Why not take the cash plus a bank card and use an ATM if necessary rather than carry the TC?

There are 4 of us and we want to make sure we have enough!! :sun2 Dont want to use ATM due to charges (we have checked with our bank) We did consider the post office card but if there is a problem (after reading reports) people have gone without cash and dont want that to happen. Can u change GBP at the airport ok and will we get a better rate in Sharm

You will ALWAYS get a better rate in Sharm.

I only take £100 sterling in Egyptian LE, then change the rest of sterling at a bank when i get there.

For 2 weeks we take £500 and normally come back with a load, thats going B & B, this time though we have been upgraded to A1 free, so wont need as much as that unless we eat out, which i know we will.

It is sooooooooo cheap there.

If you take travellers cheques you will pay extra again to change them.
Is it to late to get a Nationwide card? I use mine if needed and never had a problem, you can take it to thomas cook and they will take the cash off for you

The rate here in the UK is awful , thats why i take a minimum to start with .

You will need a lot of money for doing all the tourist trips, unless you use a visa.

I'm not too sure how easy it is to change travellers cheques outside of Namma Bay ? For example if you are down ar Ras um el Sid or north of Namma Bay, although I know there is a new mall at Nabq with shops so they may have a bank there.

Most people take about 50 pounds worth of LE from the UK to cover them for the first 24 to 48 hours and the rest in Sterling cash (keep it in a safe though) to be changed as and when you need it. Much better exchange rate in Sharm.

If you change loads into LE and then don't need it & change back to Sterling, you will pay double bubble commission. It's very much a cash culture in Egypt although If people pay for trips with Thomson, Longwood, FC etc they seem to put them on their credit cards.

I assume you are going B&B and intend to do a lot of eating out and drinking imported and premium branded alcohol? If you are going All Inclusive IMHO you will never spend your budget and will come back with enough to book another holiday.

reading this it makes me wonder if our family is not normal. we have 2 teenagers and usually spend about £800. we must be doing something wrong, and yes i do haggle for everything i buy, then again the kids like to go to the supermarkets for packets of crisps etc.. :que

We spent 500 for one week with two teens, but that was all our food and drink apart from Breakfast. We ate decent food, some of which was in our hotel so 5* hotel prices, few cocktails outside the camel bar one night.

No trips though, they go on a card, also no shopping (one towel with a camel on it :duh, few bags of Haribos & crisps in NB lol ) as there is nothing there that I really want to buy. Can live without a Shisha pipe.

we go AI and still spend that much. i`ll admit we do have 2 shisha pipes at home but the large one is from Tunisia where they are much cheaper to buy than egypt. in 06 we bought a medium sized one for about £35 went to tunisia 2 months later and bought 3 Large ones and a small one for £50.

We are self catering. Think we have decided to take all GBP and change some at the airport when we get there and then change the rest as and when we need to. We do think we are taking a lot but its better to take to much than not enough. We do eat a lot and I only drink Cider (I presume they dont sell that in egypt) otherwise it is Vodka (again does not have to be Smirnoff ) and will try a few cocktails but really don't drink to much alchohol abroad as I don't want hangover in that heat !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i take £100 worth of EGP, £100 worth of dollars,£500 GBP and use the cash machine when that runs out. i find the dollars good for tipping, last year the staff said they prefered dollars as they got a better rate than english money.

Sounds like a plan lorettac :tup Unfortunatley I dont think they have cider over there, at least I don't remember seeing any.

Have a great holiday. Where are you staying ?

We are staying at Delta Sharm? Have you been or have you seen the complex? There are bout 12 swimming pools and shops and restraunts on the comples apparenlty. We have been told it is about £1.00 (GBP) in a taxi to the centre of Naama Bay or 10p on the bus.
