There are cockroaches in Turkey yes but i can honestly say in the 8 times i have been to Marmaris i have only seen the odd one or two so don't worry to much about them.

Now the sharks and rattle snakes are another thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about wasps?? Really am not good with them- how something so small can turn you into a nervous wreck :sad Just don't react well if I get stung.

Hi Pam, I am not good with wasps either ( once stripped almost naked in our town centre because one had crawled up my sleeve of my dress) - don't know who was more scared, me or the general public!!
Anyway, there were not many wasps at the Larespark, due to the fact that they regularly 'smoke' the resort to kill the mossies, and I think that kills off the wasps too! There were a couple about, sometimes on the beach, if you left half-drunk cups of juice around. I just made sure I put all the cups etc in a bin - far away from me!!

The area surrounding Marmaris is famous for it's honey, we have found in late September and October a lot of bees were dying and just falling to the floor, out of a party of seven, four were stung by treading on them in bare feet. No issues in July/August though.

Hi Denny and Dave, thank you for the reassurance!! You did make me smile Denny :rofl although I can relate to that totally. What a horrible experience for you though! They really are evil things, I've ended up on a antihistamine/antibiotic cocktail before, not the sort of cocktail I want on my hols :cheers

Thanks again

Pam :)

boro and alizda, you're rotten! ;)
I've never figured out what purpose wasps serve other than to terrorise humans!

every holiday we go on inc one a few weeks ago my little daughter stands on a bee, even last year in the sea she stood on 1 and i was told that bees swim under water which was a shock to me, so now i make her wear beach shoes in the sea, i find wasps more a nuisance in oct when they are dying and i have been stung a few times then. as for cockroaches ive been going to turkey for over 25 years and many times each year and havent seen many at all, we saw a few in june in our hotel pool area but apart from that we never seem to see them thankfully !!

i do have a little rotten streak auntie lol!!

actually, i have to tell you this (hubby reminded me last night!) - last year in marmaris there was a shower, well more like a downpour of flying ant things, the streets and pavements were absolutely covered in them, shop keepers were sweeping them into the gutters!! It was amazing to see!!

Apparently the council had decided not to send out the bug sprayers so much and of course this happened!! Lo and behold at 3am the bug sprayer was out! It was basically like a road sweeper spraying into the air but apart from that all ok :rofl

ellie, that's weird about them swimming. I thought they didn't even like rain! Will definitely keep my flip flops on if I go to the beach.

alizda, that sounds like a biblical plague! :yikes Council cutbacks, eh? Not just a british problem! :D

i know , when she came out of the sea screaming last summer i thought it was a jelly fish sting, she had the bee sting still in her foot and our friends at the restaurant carried her to their bar and put ice etc on it pulled it out and said it was a bee, i questioned this saying are you sure i didnt know bees swam and they said yes they go in the sea for quite a while to the bottom, this was in shallow water, but its enough to have worried her about going in the sea again, she didnt go in this year til day 12 of our holiday even with shoes she was worried !!! the year before that she stood on a bee on the beach, this year around the pool so thats 3 times shes stood on a bee and always around water grrr :yikes

Always worth having a look at the excellent advice post from Spiros Skyllis on the Greek page. Most of it will apply to Turkey as well, especially on the Aegean coast:
