There is a book advertised in the paper today, "East of the Sun" by Julia Gregson. Sounds good! It is being viewed on Channel 4 at 5pm today.

After really enjoying The Death of Vishnu, I couldn't wait to get hold of The Age of Shiva -Manil Suri's latest book
Without going into great detail, I was so dissapointed, it opened with a rather sexual description of breast feeding, that made me cringe, and it didn't get any better.I won't be rushing to get a book in future without looking for reviews,as when I did a search found I wasn't the only one who wasn't impressed.
The Gift of a Cow - A translation of the Hindu novel Godaan- by Premchand 1936
I'm only half way through this book, but couldn't wait to put it on the list, because it is such a beautifully written book, with a classic portrayal of life in rural India, and human nature, a really good read, goes to the top of my list.
Must try to get hold of the 1963 Film version

Just found out that a book mentioned earlier, one I enjoyed- Vikas Swarups " Q&A " has a film version by Danny Boyle - Slumdog Millionare -due out in November

The Ganja Coast, Paul Mann, A novel about drugs, hippies, politicians, and corrupt police in Goa.
Not a great book but it made me think " could there be some truth in it ? "

The author of White Tiger was on the BBC news being interviewed this morning. (Squigs mentioned last night that White Tiger won the booker prize) Sorry I didn't get the authors name as was half asleep
Lassi have you read or heard of this one about India... its been mentioned on the Book swop thread (A novel idea)... i know you are always on the ball!!you could be our official reviewer with all your knowledge and the amount of books you get through

The White Tiger is by Aravind Adiga.
One of the other books in the final six is also set in India and is about the opium wars, Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh. Looks like I have got alot of reading to do this holiday!

Another little book I've read is "Q & A" by Vikas Swarup. About a penniless waiter from Mumbai who wins a billion rupees in a TV quiz show. A strange little book with a few little twists, quite an enjoyable read though.

True stories from many of Indias well known writers, about the complex picture of Aids in India, who it is affecting and why. An interesting read about a difficult subject, and the good thing is, the proceeds will be used to support programmes, for children affected by Aids in India.
