Hi Louise & Iflood - Re Ivana Palace hotel/SB
Sorry for the delay in replying, we've been away in London this week, only back this evening:
Yes, the Ivana Lobby Bar's prices are reasonably and certainly no dearer than the bars on the front prom.
A small beer cost about 2.50 Lev (Bulgarian local beer is lager, not too strong but nice and refreshing, various different types, mostly the same taste).
The bar does a huge selection of cocktails, the usual ones and some new ones (to us anyway). Mrs P said they did the best Pina Colada she'd every had , and she's had a few in her time, in many different countries!!!
Cocktails at the Lobby Bar cost from 6.50 - 7.50 Lev. As I have said before, we were not aware of any Happy Hour at the Lobby Bar, but they may do one, we went out of the hotel to eat (& drink) each night between 8 - 12, and ended up for our 'last few' at the Lobby Bar most nights, so may have missed any offers? The bar is ran by a Bulgarian couple and another chap (who may have been his brother?), and they are very nice, friendly people, not pushy but will chat if you make conversation and the guy likes a game of pool if the bar is not too busy. They are open for what seems like 24 hours, one of the guys stays on the bar ALL night, I'd see him when I went down at 06.30 in the morning to pop the towels out, sorry but if you can't beat um, join um .
The bar also sells chilled water and soft drinks, ices etc but the small supermarket off the Lobby is cheaper!
We found eating out was reasonably cheap in SB, but not as cheap as it seems to have been in previous years (per prev reports etc).
A good 2 course meal for us two, plus a round of drinks and 2 small bottles of water averaged 50 - 55 Lev (£21 - £23 for two). Generally prices on the front prom are a bit dearer but not much and they are nice places to eat.
The famous "DJanny's" restaurant is up past the market place, off the main road, opposite the street were the Hotel Kuban is, ask anyone - they'll know where DJ's is. This was by far the cheapest place to eat, nice food (mostly Italian or skewer kebabs, steak etc), but we found it very busy, hectic, quite a bit of waiting time etc, so although we enjoyed the meal AND it only cost 29 Lev for us two, we only went the once as it was a bit out the way for us from the Ivana end of SB.
There are loads of restaurants on the prom, just turn right of the Ivana entrance, cross the main road, walk down the side of the Marvel Hotel and Victoria Palace Hotel (can't miss it, it's massive and right on the prom), turn right onto the prom and you've got about 5Km of bars, shops and restaurants to pick from. Generally, the nearer the 'centre' you get (past the Globus Hotel on the front - turn right onto Flower Street/Corner Bar/Hotel Kuban-Casino), you will find it gets more lively and noisy.
You can get 2-4-1 offers on drinks and cocktails on the front, but of course it's 2 of the same. We really liked the cocktail bar just past the Bellvue hotel on the prom, not far past the Vic Palace, it was great for having a drink and watching the world go bye. Cocktails about 7.50 Lev BUT you get 2 (of the same, off the board at the front of the bar).
Further on there's the big bar on the beach side that looks like a frigate ship. You'll also see various GoGo dancing bars with girls dancing on the bar or tables, we gave those a miss , left them for the numerous groups of young lads and 'bar crawls'
Overall, as I've said in previous posts we really enjoyed SB and had no worries about safety when we were there. It was very busy, and may be busier in August, so you do need to be aware of things and careful with money, bags etc.
Do visit Nessabur it's very different to SB and very traditional, only 1 Lev on the bus, or 15 Lev each on the water taxi boats from one of the beach piers.
Hope ALL you lucky lot going soon have as good a time as we did, Happy Holidays
Ray
