UZUMLU

Hi Nanette,

Uzumlu is breathtakingly beautiful. It is very lush and green (the drive up to Uzumlu is beautiful in itself - the colour of the trees is striking) and the views are magnificent wherever you look, with the mountain on one side and the valley below.

It is very tranquil and quiet there (you could hear a pin drop) and there's masses of wild flowers. It's quite hilly, and depending on where your villa is situated it could be one long, hard walk into the village.

The village is very small with a handful of restaurants/shops etc. It's a typical old Turkish village and is not geared up to tourism. I've been there a few times (always by car) but would imagine the dolmus' leave every hour or so for Fethiye until the evening time (wouldn't like to guess what time the last one leaves Fethiye for Uzumlu - doubt it would be very late).

The journey into Fethiye takes about 20 minutes by car (probably 40 minutes by dolmus).

I would definitely hire a car for my stay there (driving abroad is not as daunting as you think). You'd need your own transport otherwise you could feel very isolated in Uzumlu. Although it is beautiful, there is absolutely nothing to do there. You could go on some walks (if you don't mind the scorching heat) or you could go to the cafe in the village, but other than that there is little else to do. But maybe that's what you're looking for.

Personally, as beautiful as it is I wouldn't want a holiday there (although I was at one time planning on buying a property there! - but that was more for investment). A lot of Brits have houses out there, but it isn't really a holiday place at all. It's the sort of place people visit for a long weekend - or where people retire to.

If you want somewhere off the beaten track I would advise you to stay in Kayakoy (just 10 minutes from a fantastic, secluded beach) and near to Olu Deniz, Fethiye Town etc and then you can take a trip to Uzumlu - or even spend a couple of nights there.

Hope this helps.
