Date ice cream!? Never come across that before! Will have to try it anyway. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll look out for it.

Hi,

I've found that most hotels I've stayed in in Tunisia include dates in the breakfast buffet. Also, as you love dates you might like the local date liqueur Thibarine. It'll certainly be cheaper than imported liqueurs. Though, in common with Aslemma, my favourite is Cedratine.

As for price rises, I was in Hammamet at the beginning of July and didn't find it to be noticeably more expensive than my last trip which was early last year. I did find the cost of (alcoholic) drinks and to some extent the food at the hotel more expensive, but just assumed that this was hotel pricing. I've usually found prices to vary quite a bit from one hotel to another. Outside the hotel, prices seemed to be pretty much what I was used to.

I'll be back there in 7 weeks Sunstruck so I'm hoping you're right. Glad to say I've still got enough Cedratine here to last until I get out there and am able to stock up again.

just thought of another price that may be of interest.
the safety deposit box in reception was only 2 dinars a day plus a refundable deposit of 20dinar when you hand your key back.

hi seahunt.
were they the type of security boxes that need two keys-yours and managments? did you find them very secure as i worry a bit when the safe isn't in our room
thanks

yes there were 2 keys.1 you keep and one on a chain by the boxes.the deposit boxes were to the side and behind reception desk.We felt that they were secure.Always 2 or 3 people on reception and the room where the boxes were located was in use .
Ive stayed in places where the safe in the rooms were quite unstable.not safe as you might say ;) by the way we were in the golf residence so i can't comment on other hotels

I know it's :offtop but we came home a few days ago. Just wanted to report - dates every breakfast and most lunches and dinners, so I was happy! No sign of date ice-cream though. There was green ice cream, but it was pistachio. However this is my favourite flavour and you rarely find it in England, so that was good too! Thibarine I also liked a lot! Cedratine was OK and Boukha seemed pretty tasteless really!

Prices outside our AI hotel all seemed very reasonable to me. The taxis seemed pretty cheap considering how expensive petrol is these days.

I too love the pistachio icecream mehmeh and hope to be eating plenty of it in a few weeks time. I've booked my transfer from Tunis to Sousse with Med Hotels for £5.60 so won't have to haggle with the taxi drivers on the first evening at least. In March one of them wanted 5 dinar from my hotel in Sousse down to the Medina - I told him 2 and he said his wife had said he was to charge tourists 5. I said I had been so often I was almost Tunisian so he agreed 2 (but I gave him 3 for his cheek)

Just came back on Monday, and Tunisia is still excellent value for money.I hadnt noticed any price increases on last year.We stayed at the Royal Kenz in Port el Kantaoui, lovely hotel, and we got taxis to the marina and Sousse for less this time.We tried the Formular One for lunch which came recommended 5 minutes from our hotel,Chicken burger and Fries, salad, and milk shakes for 2 for under £5,marvellous,spotless snack place.Your money really goes a long way,I will hopefully be back again next year.
