Hi we went to Santorini in June and the average cost of a meal for 2 starters and main meal, litre cafafe of house wine was about 30 to 40 euros. We stayed in Kamari and we never had a bad meal, be careful if you visit Oia make sure you do not get ripped off heard about people paying 130 euros.

Wow that is expensive!
Taking the higher end of the scale, that's around £430ish just for an evening meal plus wine for a two week stay. On top of that you can add drinks in the evening, maybe lunch and breakfast. Not much change from £1000, and that's just food and drink!
Prices have definitely shot up. We were in Perissa last July for two weeks. We took £1000 spending money and came back with around £100.

Thanks for that it has helped!
Don't worry we are especially careful in places like Oia and Fira, we tend to prefer small traditional places where the locals eat to 'posh' places with linen tablecloths and wine by the bottle . Local wines and homecooked food is so much nicer there!
I'm not surprised that prices have hiked up - it seems to have happened everywhere ! but I'm sure it will still be cheaper than eating out here!
:cheers

Just about I reckon!
It is a shame really, as we go to Greece every year, (love the place) but this year the cost of getting there coupled with the poor exchange rate, and the cost of food & drink, has put us off. So instead we are off to Turkey (Olu Deniz) where things are a little cheaper. I'll miss not have my Greek 'Fix' but theres always next year when things may have improved.
Have a good holiday anyway!

I think you will find the food to be similar there!
We have a local Turkish restaurant and much of the cuisine is akin to Greek: Dolmades , roasted Lamb, Briam and many aubergine and tomato based disches! and not a kebab in sight!

Yes it's a shame the euro has hiked everything up ... and dare I say it (for fear of reprisals) the Greek "toilet situation" still leaves a lot to be desired!

Yes, the food is similar, but nowhere near as expensive. A typical cost for an evening meal in Turkey is £8.
Kebabs are a fast food, even in Turkey, so they are not sold that much in restaurants. You get them from street vendors, and they are terrific, nothing like the one's at home.
The Greek toilet situation has been like that, well, since they first had toilets. What's the first thing you do when you get home? Yep, that's right, look for 'the' bin!!

The secret to a low cost of living in Greece is to go to the S Peloponese. This is primarily a Greek tourist area - though a few campers, Brits and Scandinavians visit. Enormous sandy beaches. Laid back and quiet places - not the the hedonists.

Average evening meal for 2 with drinks? €20 for a standard meal, €30 for something special. There's a lot about Messinia in particular on my web site.
