Hi
Can anyone tell us if there have been any problems with mosquito's in Sidari so far this year? When we were there 2 years ago the mosquito's were rife! Last year wasn't such a problem but we are just wondering if we need to carry lots of repellents for when we arrive in September this year? Mosquito's or not, we are eager for our holiday again!
we came back from sidari two weeks ago and yes those little blighters were out in force. so make sure you take your sprays etc and have a great holiday
We were there 11-25 July - and sorry to say, I have never experienced anything like it ever. I have never ever been bitten anywhere I have travelled spain/italy/greece/ etc..... - like I was bitten here! I woke up one morning to find the little bleeders had bitten my face (10 bites altogether - ) - what a site I looked, - the bites formed into blisters that just oozed puss (Sorry for the great detail - I hope your not eating . I got them all over 1 leg from the knee downwards (a month later they are still "Scabbed", - which I know they will scar - as some of them are the size of a 10P- (I kid you not!)
Don't let this put you off - I just wanted to warn you how bad they were - so you go well equipped!, - apart from this we had a fantastic time- absolutely loved the place- one of the best resorts I have been to - and just wished I had not booked next years holiday (Before I went away), or we would be back nxt year.
Have a fab time.
(Ps the water wark in brilliant - not hydropolis (sp?), the other one!)
PPs Our friends swear by deet, - they were not bitten once - will be taking some of that away nxt year!
You don't say if you used any kind of repelents. We always use jungle formula plugins and roll ons no problem
Yes we used the sprays (even bought one which was recommended to us in sidari
-( b4 bite, - with citronella - didn't work for me though), used it before going out, we had those plug in repellants too. Also those sticks (ammonia ones),are good -(Stops the itching - by making the bite sting ).
I had never seen so many bites, on so many people - ever! There were some people there much much worse than us!
Next year will definately be taking deet - I know a few people who have used this, - and have never had any probs! Details of this can be found on the mosquito's thread.
Regards,
belly
We had a bad year 2 years ago in Sidari but last year I found some repellent which contained 50% deet. I know about the scare a couple of years ago about deet but the pharmacy site I used told you all about it and the results of the testing they had been doing. I decided that to use it for just 2 weeks of the year, mainly on clothing would not hurt so we did and didn't get as much as one bite! I need to go back to the site to get some more after what you have all been saying
Many thanks
Might be worth a try.

Sorry to say that we normally go to Sidari at beginning of October and the mosquito problems has been just as bad. Especially after they have some rain there
I would suggest something strong but which you can put on your clothing rather than your skin.
tipsyletti,AT LAST A REPLY !!!! cheersfor that, any suggestions, some people are talking about deet and other recomend jungle formula.changing the subject any idea as to what we can expect weather wise in mid sept, just dont no what to take clothes wise?
Yes we too are off to Sidari on the 22nd of September. We usually go about a week or 2 later and get some good weather, coming home with a really good tan! Last year we did encounter some really bad storms, thunder, lightening etc which lasted for days on and off but still at times during the day were able to get out swimming and walking about. Still got a nice tan. The temperature out there is still around 30 but looking at the Corfu site I use, a 5 day forcast at the moment is showing anything between 34 & 37!
I use a deet based roll on which I found online at travel pharmacy last year. They do different strengths of it 25%, 50% and even up to 100% which stats it should only be used on clothes. Take a look, it tells you all about it too. travelpharm.com, it may help you. I received my order last week which only took about 3 days to get here.
Hope you have a great holiday. look out for us lol!
tipsyletti (I'm a Karen too!)
Hi, Don't know if you have gone on your Sept holiday but we have just returned end of Aug and the Mosquito's in Sidari are very active. We bought a plug in for the room at a local shop for 7 euro's and sprayed insect repellant daily only 5 euro locally to save the weight in the suitcase and we were fine, others who didn't were badly bitten. The wasps were just becoming a nuisance also. We had a brill holiday so have a good time
so were are you staying in sid,we at christakis apartments the canal area i believe.shall i wear a rose!! hehehe, lol.
hopefully the weather is nice then, dont mind some rain as long as we still get chance to sunbathe and venture out.can you recomend places around sidari,o also were is the nearest market and is it any good?
talk soon
karen
so much i can tell you! Christakis are just down the road from us. A little way out of the main strip about 10 min walk. Nice place from outside, although we have never ventured in! A couple we met last year tried to get there this year but the hotel is closing a little earlier this year so they have gone elsewhere. You must be one of the last staying there.
Loads of supermarkets, some nice size ones down the road behind the Mimosa hotel on your right as you walk down. A lovely little fruit, veg, gifts and cigs store just opposite where you are going, the little man who owns it is lovely. If you want a really good meal out sometime, the Sailors if it is still there this year, just down the road from the veg stall on that side. Recommend the Lamb Kleftico which is done in filo pastry Mmmm. And reasonably priced but can be busy. Just down and opposite side of road is a nice little cafe type place which does amazing kebabs, best I have ever tasted. It is called Litsa's and very very cheap. The lady speaks really good english too.
If you like a walk, go in the opposite direction for a change. We stay at a little place further up from you called Katsaros. It has a little gift shop and a taverna with a pool anyone can use. The owner is lovely. You will find a couple of shops on the way up and if you then go further still, there is quite a big supermarket but it is a fair walk. That road goes around in a circle to the Canal dmour. That is a must too! The canal area is so nice, some lovely little beaches hidden away.
Gosh I could write a book
Where are you coming from? We are down in Plymouth.
If you want to know anything else let me know?
Karen

I came back from Sidari on friday, take spray with Deet in it, it has to have Deet, they will not touch you, last year i was bitten all over, this year, not once, or my little son, just sprayed this can on, you can buy it there, got mine from wilkinsons, yellow can with red lid and contains Deet, and had a plug in also got from wilkinsons and kept that on all the time and sprayed the room every night with Teza mossy and fly spray, got it at the local supermarket and hey, not one bite at all, brillient holiday, best ever, cannot wait to go back next year, sidari is fantastic!
thanks for the advice. I have my deet repellent all ready to go. I have also got a matching mozzi machine.
Glad to hear that you liked Sidari, so many come on here and put it down. I love it, been going since 1991 and no-where else I have been can touch it for me
That was my third year in a row and will be returning to the Lagoon next August as well, love the place, sidari is great, lovely people and its very commercialised now, but obviously people do not read up about it, make sure you pack your Deet, and get some of that spray from the little supermarket just past memories restaurant on the left, its called Teza i think, blue can, just spray your room every night and shut all doors and windows and hey presto no bites, that deet can spray is brillient though and the plug in i got, not bitten once as i said, compared to last year, i was covered in them, have a great time, wish i was going back, havent been back a week and i am already depressed lol
If the supermarket you are referring to is the big one behind the mimosa, its shut down, unfortunately the young guy who owned it died earlier this year from cancer, and they have not opened it up, such a shame, but the one on the main strip at the top, past Mikey's Inn, is fairly reasonable and the co-op as well, just past Alex and his horse and kart, down the back there, quite cheap actually!
