Alitalia has applied for bankruptcy protection. It comes as no surprise as the airline has been almost dead in the water for some time and only kept afloat by (allegedly) illegal government hand-outs.

Alitalia have been supported by the state government for years under various disguises - including competition restrictions out of the Milan airports in particular.
It operates a lot of ageing aircraft and the news has been speculated for long time that they would fall unless support is on going. The airline has been subject to many take over discussions.
