Went to Pirgi, Ypsos, Corfu, never been before, taxi trip was frightening as we appeared to going twice the speed limit. Very few police around and most of the kids are flying around on mopeds with no helmets or any protecting gear at all!
Also they drive on the wrong side of the road, that takes a bit of getting used to. There appears to be no parking restictions at all
I got the impression something disasterous has happened to the economy in recent years as about two thirds of the businesses, shops, hotels, cafes, restaurants, living places seem to have gone to the wall, locals tell me this all happened when the Euro was forced on the country and businesses are still collapsing now. Best place to eat money wise is the hairy lemon, good prices the same brothers also own dirty Nellies night club on the seafront, they tell me that the hairy lemon may close down next year as it is losing money.
Analiza apartments was where I stayed and the pool was great food was good if not a bit pricey.
Als resaurant on the seafront was nice you were on the beach but colas were expensive,
Trips out were best booked by Sophie Homer just along from Dirty nellies, she arranged boat trips, car hire, Greek nights for a third cheaper than anyone else anywhere!
Greek night was very good and I was nearly kidnapped by an Estonian woman also staying at Analiza appts, but My wife rescued Me.
Boat trip over to Corfu Old town was very interesting could have stayed longer but only had a couple of hours, watch out for packs of stray dogs and the smelly drains.
With respect for the locals you can go in the orthodox churches the chanting is quite incredible to listen to, women need to ensure they are covered, men need to take off hats but shorts are ok.
Local pirgi church had a spring water supply which is drinkable and free though You may need to queue with the locals, bottled is expensive, tap supply is too salty to drink
Local animals seem to consist of wild dogs, under nourished pigeons, unfriendly cats, sparrows, mosquito's, wasps and lizards that do a very good spiderman impersonation
Sea is so clear it is untrue, and so warm even at 7am and people regularly swim after dark, beautiful fish just sidle past You, watch out for black spiny urchins on the rocks
Take care near electrical installations some of these are lethal, if I figure out how to upload images I will show a completely exposed 3 phase 415 volts cut out board on the main road just across the road from the Hairy Lemon, in the UK the electricity company would be shot. Some of the electrical installations at Analiza were dodgy as well, fortunately nothing that children could reach
Pantocrator mountain was a scary trip in a hire car most of the roads had sheer drops either side and no crash barriers the monastry at the top is being renovated but has been desacrated by television companies who have put a 150 metre steel lattice tower right in the middle of the monastery garden
Drove to Paleokastritsa but got there after midday and was so crowded I had to leave, the sea there was an absolute picture and as I climbed to hills up to Bella vista the whole panorama unfolded, quite amazing. more to follow......
Also they drive on the wrong side of the road
Really! In Greece?
Sorry, couldn't resist that.
