firstly welcome to the Cyprus forum of HT..

we always change sterling cash in resort wherever we go...
secondly have you seen the favourite restaurant thread a couple around the Protaras/Permera area are mentioned as you did not state which hotel we cannot make close recommendations as the whole area from cavo greko north seems to be sold as Protaras it could be you will be nearer to Paralimni which being a Greek working town has many traditional taverns

Protaras is a lot nicer than Puerto del Carmen, the beaches in Protaras are on a different planet to pdc. There are lots of nice restaurants, Corner restaurant is the best in my opinion, it has got a little cheesy with all the tribute acts etc

If you want Greek try Mykonos in Eden Square. Probably the best place to eat in Protaras now is the Kamakura Japanese Restaurant also in Eden Square. A little expensive but great food and a great experience.

As for the Euro, I went in August. The first week you could exchange your sterling at around 127 which was a good rate. The pund took a bit of a nosedive that 2nd week and it dropped to 117 which was around the rate of exchange in England when we left. Personally i used the cashpoints out there which were not a problem.

The thing i noticed now they changed to the Euro is how expensive it was since i last visited Cyprus. Last time i went it was in October and was pretty quiet. All the locals were telling me how quiet it was for August and this was due to how expensive Cyprus has become so take plenty of money.

Have a good time.

we went last year when it was still Cypriot pounds and again this year after is became the € !

Can't say it was really that much different in costs other than a little bit of price increase but you would expect that a year on !...

Jeep Safari from Pernera to Troodos 2007 was Cy£38 (so being very rough I make that each cypriot pound about £1.20 Stirling so thats £45 English ) and same trip with same company in 2008 was €55 (so again very rough each euro is £0.80 Stirling so thats £44... if my maths is right I make that cheaper !...)

Thanks for all your help. We are staying at The Andreotis which I think is at the south end of Protaras. How far is that from Paralimni?
Is the jeep safari worth doing?

The Andreotis is inland of the main E307 road aprox 700yds from the nearest beach a little further to fig tree bay, prox 1.75km from Permera and 300 yds from the begining of the main strip in Protaras

Yes the jeep safari is worth doing.. I've done it twice and both times it was a great day out... must point out it is a jeep safari... if you are used to luxury driving and have never been bounced around in a landrover before bare it in mind... lol

Hi
We just got back from Protaras on Wednesday and had a great time. The weather was fantastic all week apart from the thunderstorm and heavy rain on the morning we left. Did anyone else feel the earth tremor on Sunday afternoon? Apparently it measured 4.3.
The Andreotis apartments were fine although very basic and lacking in storage space. I have a very untidy 17 year old son so it is difficult to keep an apartment tidy at the best of times. The pool area and bar were very good though and never very crowded. We used the onsite supermarket too although we didn't really buy much more than water.
We ate in lots of different places, most of which were recommended here and never had a bad meal all week. I can definitely recommend the meze in The Olympus. It's a good thing I shared it with my son who has a good appetite or we would not have made much of an impression on it. We ate there twice and although it was a little pricier than some of the other restaurants the quality of the food was good and worth a little extra. We were made to feel like old friends too even though we had never been before. The Blue Moon also served a good value meal and so did Georgia's. We found the hypnotist at The Love Boat very entertaining but you do pay for it in the price of the drinks. Cheers too was very good value as suggested by lots of people but I wouldn't recommend Rives. We went in there because they were advertising Magners for 3 euros (17 year olds have very expensive tastes). It was very weak and the cocktail I had tasted of pure sugar...maybe that was just a bad choice on my part. Steer clear of the toilets though! The resort itself was very quiet but that was OK with us, I am sure it is much livelier in high season. We wanted sunshine and a relaxing week and that is exactly what we got. Don't think we will be going back though. What's Paphos like.....?
Thanks for all the suggestions

We stayed in October so I can't really answer your question but I would be very surprised if you can't get a Christmas dinner. Protaras is a very British resort
