We have returned this week from a two centre holiday. We have spent our holidays in Turkey for the past five years, and this year decided to do something different so the we spent first week on a Gullet the second week at the Belcekiz beach. The week on the gullet was fantastic. The gullet was basic. The beds were kingsize and extremely comfortable, but they left little room in the cabin - but we only used it for sleeping and changing. The crew were fantastic, from the tasty food they served to the nightly entertainment they provided.
We got on really well with the other 10 guests and all in all it was one of our best weeks holidays ever.
After reading the hotel reviews on this and other sites I was perhaps expecting too much from the Belcekiz and Olu Deniz. We had booked a double room (there is a supplement in Thomson's brochure for this) we were shown to a twin room. When we asked for a double we were told that they would push the 2 beds together - why do they charge a supplement for this. The beds were the smallest that we have ever slept in Turkey or any other hotel. I am 5ft 9 and my feet overhung the end. The room was on the ground floor overlooking the garden. The sun loungers around the quiet adult pool were packed in so close they touched each other - you could not move them to catch the sun. The gardens were mud patches and over grown grass. Because of this we didn't spend any time during the day at the hotel (except when I was ill). The few drinks (vodka and coke} we did have were so weak they tasted of very sweet cola. The wine was undrinkable - tried both the red and white. The Turkish wine on the gullet was very drinkable.
The selection of food at the hotel was unbelievable. At each meal time we were spoiled for choice, but like many hotels the meat and fish was frozen not fresh, and I was taken ill with s and d and severe stomach pains on the third day (I hadn't eaten anywhere else). I couldn't leave my room for two days. OH was OK but we had eaten different meals. The hotel seems spotlessly clean - the only dubious practice I saw was dirty table clothes were turned over and the cutlery and serviettes laid on them. The animation team reminded me of holiday camp red/blue coats - OK if you are into that type of thing.
Olu Deniz as really stunning scenery around the resort, but the resort itself is very bright, lively and loud. It is packed with shops selling the usual tacky fakes and souvenirs, noisy bars and supposedly Turkish restaurants selling English versions of Turkish food. We could not find a locanta in Olu.
We did the "walk on the wild side" trip booked with the rep. I know we paid extra than booking it a local agent, but it was a great day and the guide was good. The restaurant where we had lunch had the one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen. The food there was great.
To sum up, we will definitely take another gullet holiday, but don't think that we will return to Olu.
I tend to agree to a point re Olu. I too found it too touristy and british but it did have a nice vibe to it and I was in a great group which made for some happy memories. Shame you weren't too impressed with the Belcekiz as it does get so many great reviews but I like to hear all round opinions and it's clear (aside from the food issue and sunbeds/muddiness) that often it's a taste thing. I too am not much for enforced animation but for others it's a big plus side and the cheesier the better!
