I've only stayed in Montego Bay and although I did venture out of the hotel I didn't go too far. Personally I found the Jamaicans much more intimidating than the Dominicans, they just don't take no for an answer. Our hotel made us sign out whenever we left so they can make a report if you don't return, that didn't do much to make me feel safe.
Unless you speak Patwa you might struggle to understand them, I know I did and it made me feel very stupid because they are actually speaking English.
I met some Canadian girls who go regularly and they usually employ a taxi driver to escort them when going out and about, he protected them from hassle and unwanted attention.
Lots of people went clubbing in the evenings but the hotel arranged for some of the animation team to go with them and transport was arranged to get them there and back safely.

I'm not intimidated by much normally and have travelled many times to the DR and once to Barbados but I would be wary wandering about Jamaica as a single female, even in my 50's I got hit on.

Hi Thankyou for the reply...............I'm still looking at Jamaica but mainly the Negril area at the moment. I always feel safe in the DR and I go about on my own day and night, dark or light so I think I'll look into jamaica a bit further first.....I dont want to feel unsafe......
cheers again........I'll post when I decide on what I'm doing..

Hi Nuttysam

I met a lady in the DR last year at Iberostar Costa Dorada who travels alone - she was so confident, it was great chatting to her.

Anyway as for Jamaica - you will be fine travelling alone - stick to the busier resorts as suggested , Montego Bay, Negril etc and you will always be surrounded by helpful people.

If you are used to travelling alone you are obviously a confident person who can take care of themselves otherwise you woulnt travel solo

its just common sense really - do there as you would do here if you travelled alone. If you seem vunerable people will take advantage of you anywhere in the world -but you will absolutely love Jamaica - i promise you that you will end up going back.

As for the locals, Jamaicans are very friendly people - they love to talk and will strike up a conversation with you - your sense will tell you if its going in the wrong direction, but honestly you will be OK. I just wouldnt advertise it that you are a solo traveller - but Id say that to whichever country you went to alone, not just Jamaica.

Many jamacians have either travelled to the UK themselves or have family here so you will find common ground.

Hope you have a great holiday whatever you decide.
