I wouldn't recommend getting a balcony in Singapore as it would be very uncomfortable sitting out with the high humidity.

We had a shower before leaving the hotel at 10pm to go to the airport. Just from the walk from the hotel to the taxi and then into the aiport had us soaking in sweat.

Here is a copy of my second Singapore trip to give you some ideas of what to do.
Re balconies- we did have one on our first trip but only used it to stand a couple of minutes at a time to look down on the river and its goings on. As Luci says, you won't want to sit out on it as it is far too humid! Clarke Quay is where it would be ideal for you to stay as there are loads of restaurants and bars around about which means no need for taxis at night if you don't want to. ( Please note we had a further day in Singapore after Bali) You may want to book a hotel with a pool to give you the option of an hour now and again cooling off- we never got round to that but then weren't there for 5 days.

Singapore humid...just wait till you get to KL Fiona.

Finding a hotel with a balcony is the tricky bit, but if you can find one with a decent view I'd go for it. Shangri-Las Rasa Sentosa has them with views over a fine (man made) beach. But then its not in the centre of the action as its on Sentosa. Still with your budget Gill you should have a good choice of four and five star properties.

Hi Gill,

You have a decent budget, so should get a decent room.

The lovely Garden Wing at the Shangri-La has balconies - and amazing rooms. It's a big hotel - 750 rooms, but it doesn't feel like it, and is consistently voted one of the worlds best hotels.

If you like a bit of character, the Berjaya Duxton is a little in need of renovation, has no pool, but I like it!

The Pheonix is soulless, but great value, and on Orchard Road, and it's room keys double up as 'oyster cards' on the Metro, which is handy.

I've heard good things about the New Majestic - but yet to go myself.

Enjoy Singapore!

I don't think I'd fancy going to the Shangri La on Sentosa as I think I'd feel a bit stuck. However, as Gill is going as a last stop of a probably tiring journey it may be that she would like some R&R
( and Sunbear- if KL is more humid than my last time in Singapore I don't think I'll bother leaving the hotel  )

I have been to KL lots of time and have always found it to be much less humid than Singapore.

I agree with Rickt

Even though it rained a lot the last time I was in KL I didn't find it anywhere near as humid as Singapore.

Try and do the night Safari at the Singapore Zoo. You will have loads of time to see everything in Singapore. Because of the heat and humidity shopping can be very tiring and I would guess you will end up spending quite a few hours relaxing at your hotel pool.

Thank you all so so much for all that......I have got a price for the Raffles The Plaza Singapore........but I am keen on looking at others....if I can get a great deal than all the better more to spend on shopping!!!! Well with whats left after my trip!!! Do you think i should book the hotel up soon with being there in December 10th-15th???? Or will I get a better deal in say a month or 2???

YES a pool is a 100% YES!!!!! A lovely view is a YES and also a hotel that is near to things dont want to have to be getting taxis all the time plus dont want to have to walk a distance on my own to get back to the hotel!!!

I will do the night safari I did look at it but wasnt too sure but this is what I like when people suggest things that they have done I know I want to do Sentosa think they have a cable car!!!????? Been told the hop on hop bus is good not sure if I should do 1 or 2 days on that???? Any other suggestions of places to see or maybe a day shopping and a day relaxing!!!!!

Hi
Hi,

Can any one tell me can you buy Radley Handbags in Singapore???

Also the Afternoon tea at Raffles or the Singapore Sling at Raffles is it best to pre book a trip or do it on your own?

I assume that the Night Safari is best to pre book and I fancy some sort of evening trip on a boat to see the lights from the water.

Gillsmudge,

afraid Bali is too far away for a day trip. You could slip over to Bintan on a day trip on the ferry should you fancy a change of scene. There are nature trails on Sentosa, where you might see the odd bird or macaque...all pretty tame though. The beach by the Rasa Sentosa is a nice place to chill for a while...although its odd seeing all the container vessels and tankers anchored just offshore. Sentosa is served by a cable car that connects up to Mount Faber. There is also cause way and ferry links.

We had high tea at the Stamford - used to be a Westin - but is now a Swissotel and the hotel has terrific views over the city. The restaurant was some 69 floors up with panoramic views. Whether they still serve the high tea I'm not sure. I gather the hotel rooms have balconies but I've never stayed in the hotel so can't comment on the quality of it.

Hi
Hi,

Me again!!! Would you say it would be better to pay extra (unless it is included!!!) for breakfast?? Or just pay for it direct at the hotel? Also I see some hotels offer canapas (sorry if spelling wrong!!) and evening cocktails is it worth paying the little bit extra for this???

we booked executive rooms in the Swisshotel Merchant Court. The room was lovely, you check in in the executive lounge. Breakfast is included and the canapes and cocktails were great at night!
I never answered your query re Raffles. YOu just walk in to have your singapore sling. We never had afternoon tea there. We did however, use their restuarant at night and I can certainly recommend it( for the life of me I just remember the name of it just now!) we did pre book that.

Hi
Hi Fiona,

Thanks for that....i know everyone is saying that I wouldnt need a balcony but I dont know it is just one of those things I suppose I like the idea of having a balcony but of course with a view!!!

I know the hotel I have booked in Sydney i paid a little bit extra to have a room with a balcony but also a view over Darling Harbour.

I think from what you have said i will pay the extra to have a rate that includes breakfast and the canapas and cocktails!!! I know in New York I was told it wasnt work paying the extra for breakfasts!! Each city will be different.

So it will be a room with a balcony, breakfast included, canapas and evening cocktails!!! Now to search for hotels that do all that within my budget!!! Ok Ok if I need to go up to £600 for the 5 nights I will do....well it will be the last leg on this RTW trip so would be nice to finish with a bang!! But not too much of a bang, i have xmas to come back to!!!

In Singapore did you find the likes of Clarins, chanel etc very cheap? Just was going to buy in NYC on my way out. Also do you know can you get Radley Handbags in Singapore??? I know you cant in NYC

there are definite bargains to be had in Singapore. However, I have been during the great sale that they have in the summer. I also did not buy cosmetics so perhaps someone else can help.
