As we had enjoyed our skiing holiday in Passo Tonale, Italy this year, we had booked in April 2008 to go back next year with the same company, First Choice. We had an excellent holiday, and had a great rep.
We had booked through First Choice website, as we had done before, received our confirmation through the post, which listed what we had booked. Our booking was for flights from Edinburgh to Innsbruck, as Edinburgh (although a 4 hour drive away for us as we live in the North of Scotland) was our nearest airport. Our booking was transferred onto the new booking system as First Choice has merged with Thomsons. We received another confirmation of our booking, and the flight times slightly changed as we were now on Thomson flights instead of First Choice airways. This was acceptable. We received another letter thanking us for booking our holiday with First Choice, and enclosed are our booking details. I had scanned through this quickly, and thought everything was fine. Another two families who we are friends with, have booked the same holiday to come along with us. It was one of these friends that informed me that our flight details have been changed. We are flying from Manchester to Verona. This would create an extra 4 hours driving for us each way.
My email went off to First Choice, they say they are quite within their right to alter our holiday details, however, they did admit that this was a considerable change to our holiday.
They had given me three options.
1. Fly from Manchester, and they would consider paying for hotel and car parking booked through themselves(flight leaving Manchester is 6.10 am, and arriving back 7.00pm)
2. Book another holiday with them.
3. A full refund.
My friend had phoned Customer Relations, and she was told more or less that she could like it or lump it, but when she had mentioned it affects a total of 10 people under 3 seperate bookings, she went to speak to someone else. This person then said, since there are 10 of us we could get a private transfer from Innsbruck to Passo Tonale but would have to wait for someone to come back from her holiday. Well this person has come back, and we are still waiting to hear. I had phoned at the start of the week to see if there was any update, but no, I also enquired about Option 1 (my husband wants this sorted), and could we get 2 nights hotel accomodation, the night before we fly out and the night that we fly back to Manchester, as it would be an 8 hour drive back home. The answer was no, just one nights accomodation. My other friend phoned the next day, got quite a nice person, and they said the manager has quite a lot on his/her plate at the moment, especially with the merger. This person also said that there is also another five families caught up in this and waiting to be dealt with by the manager.
We have tried costing another holiday with First Choice, unfortunately, it would cost us another £300. Is there any advice on how to proceed and to hold them to our original booking. It has been 4 weeks now since we have originally contacted them, time is getting on, and I'm hoping that they are not stalling for time so there will be no seats left on the Edinburgh to Innsbruck.
Many thanks for reading this and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Are there still seats on the Edinburgh - Innsbruck ? If so what is the reason you are being moved to Manchester ?
The impression I get is that they have dropped the EDI/INN flight, if this is the case they I think they have offered what they can which is move to MAN or full refund. If they are paying for a nights hotel and parking in Manchester I doubt they will offer much more. If there is no Edinburgh - Innsbruck flight anymore then I dont see how you will be able to hold them to the original booking.
Sorry I cant be more positive.
Stewart
Have First Choice changed your flight because they are no longer transfering holidaymakers off the Edinburgh-Innsbruck flight to Passo Tonale? If this is the reason I would be pressing for the private transfer option. I would have thought due to the number of passengers involved this would have been the best option.
Keep on at them. Having had a problem with Thomsons earlier this year I can only stress that you just have to keep on and on at them. Try asking for a manager. You might well be told 'it's not our policy to escalate calls'. Make sure you get the name of each person you speak to and keep a note of dates and times etc.
First Choice airways flights have all been prefixed with TOM since the merger.
Sorry can't be of more assistance. Hope you get this sorted to your satisfaction.
Many thanks for your replies.
The Edinburgh - Innsbruck flight is still in operation to serve the Austrian resorts and also Livigno in Italy, so can we still hold First Choice to the original booking.
First Choice said, "for operational reasons", they are not operating the transfer from Innsbruck to Passo Tonale. When we had gone this year on 29th March, there were only ourselves (family of 3) and another family of 3 (not friends of ours) travelling to Passo Tonale. They had put on a minibus for all 6 of us, and apparently, the usual transfer company had sub-contracted the job out to someone else (the people with the minibus). On the way back, we were on a coach (the usual transfer company), as there were a large number of people travelling to Passo Tonale for the last week of the ski season as Austria had closed quite a lot of their resorts.
I had asked First Choicer if they could use the contacts that they have used before, but it feels that they are stalling us for time etc. It isn't unreasonable for them to put on a private transfer for 10 of us, as we are all travelling at the same time. I don't really want to leave this much longer in case there are no seats left on the Edinburgh - Innsbruck route.
Another grievance I have with First Choice, they never issued a letter to explain they have changed our flights to the Manchester - Verona route. If it wasn't for one of our friends who had read the third booking letter, we probably wouldn't have noticed until we had got our tickets and it would have been too late to do anything then.
I have spent quite a while in Thomas Cook to see if they can find us any alternatives for us, but it is proving very difficult to find anything from a Scottish airport for around the same price.
I think my friend is phoning tomorrow, we have a list of names of who we have spoken to, and we are quite well known in their department, but haven't actually managed to speak to the manager. The manager seems to be in meetings a lot, but we are put on hold when the person needs to check something. Another ploy I think.
Here's hoping that we may have news tomorrow.
We hope to have this confirmed by email by the end of today, and a letter will be sent out to all of us to confirm our travel arrangements.
That is good news for us.
Thanks again.
Are they giving you the airport that you wanted too,if so it sounds a really good result, well done for not accepting their change,it's time we all stood up to tour operators.T.
Many thanks for the update. I'm really glad you have resolved it to your satisfaction. Well done.
We have our original booking now, so we fly from Edinburgh to Innsbruck. At least we don't have to waste the Travelodge booking, even though we got it on a cheap deal.
I hope the other families caught up in this can have the outcome that they would like. We were fortunate, as there was a total of 10 travelling but on three different booking reference numbers.
I can confirm that I got their email this afternoon, and the cost is the same.
Many thanks again for the interest in this post.
Jean.
Glad you persevered and managed to get a result on this one. Well done.
Glad your sorted.
Good result,it pays to keep on at them.
