only did a day trip round Keff last month stopped at a tavern for lunch a a few bars for the necessary substance it was no more expensive than Zakynthos [where we were staying] I cant comment on resort prices as we tend to keep clear of them ad get out of the main towns
We stayed in Agia Efimia first week of september and had a fantastic holiday, I have to say we found prices very reasonable. If I remember correctly a large Mythos was 2.5 euro's in Captain Corelli's and a litre of wine was about 5 euro's in the resturants that we tried. We have been to several Greek islands and overall I would say Kephalonia is the best one.
Gone are the days of the Drachma. Back in 2001, you could get 550 Drachma to the £ and a large Mythos or Heineken was 700-800 Drachma, so the equivalent of £1.27-£1.45 a bottle. Those were the days!!!
Seriously, in Crete last year (as this is the Crete forum of course) we were paying 3 euros for a large bottle of Amstel/Mythos/Heineken and were quite happy with that, although you have to remember the Euro rate was 1.45 or similar back then.
I am just wondering what you were drinking? Everybody knows that the beers you would probably look at drinking in the UK (Fosters, ok bad example, Stella, I've even seen Carling, Becks, Grolsch etc) would be more expensive than the likes of Mythos and Amstel. For example, our friends went to Corfu in 2003 and they were paying 4 euros back then for a pint of Fosters. Why? I don't know, they like Fosters but when we quizzed them they were happy to point out they could have drunk Amstel or Mythos for 2 euros a bottle but didn't like either.
As for being charged commission, I'm afraid that still happens throughout the world. Your best bet to avoid this next time would be to get a Nationwide Debit Card and get your currency out of a cashpoint over there. No commission and the best "bank" rate offered.
Hi Charlie, sorry I can't help as I've never been to Kefalonia. I'm just wondering whether you might get more response in the "other Greek islands" forum as this is the Crete forum
moved to correct forum missed this one
We had a wonderful week in Kefalonia (Assos) last year. We didn't find it any more expensive than anywhere else in Greece, except perhaps the one night where we had a more upmarket meal in Fiscardo - but even there it was possible to eat reasonably. We also found the people in Assos very friendly. The main thing that made a difference was the lousy exchange rate. We have also got a NationWide account this year, which gets you a better rate with no commision.
Cant agree with you about Greek hospitalty in Lassi, I think they are very welcoming. We have booked to go back next year, but expect even higher prices.
The day of the cheap holiday is over for now.
A friend of mine returned recently from Turkey saying the prices there have really escalated. Now they are ripping people off, not even the Euro to blame !
Meals were good quality and averaged about £7-£10 for a 4 course meal. One restaurant was selling 2 meals for £9.I havent seen a price rise in many years and some things are the same price as they were 15 years ago.The only thing thats expensive is imported drinks.
Kefalonia is more expensive this year than last, but I still rate it highly amongst resorts I have been to.
hi all,
breezo i hope you are right about kefalonia, lassi. never been but have booked for next year.
went to icmeler, turkey in may/june this year thought it had gone very expensive to what it was.
paid on average 2.50/3.00 ytl for efes also meals were much dearer.
best regards percy123
I remember going to Corfu in he 80's when you could get 3 bottles of Helex Fix for 100 drachma (beer)
pojo
Firstly, just because it was more expensive than you expected does not make it a rip off and secondly if it had been cheaper I suspect you'd would have found the locals more friendly. As for being charged commisson for changing money - tell me somewhere that doesn't do this (and if they don't it's because they offer a less attracive rate of exchange).
