Depending on when you arrive at Istanbul - and at which airport, you might like to think about the following for ideal venues for overnight stops:

Eceabat - and have a quick tour of the Gallipoli peninsula, battlefields and monuments, then take the ferry (regular and reasonably priced) to Canakkale and continue to Marmaris - a long drive, and make sure you take the MOTORWAY around Izmir and not the route through the town!!

Bergama - and visit the famous ruins; lovely town

Selçuk (which is worth a whole day - ie 2 overnights) - and visit Ephesus - the Virgin Mary's House (Meryema) - St John's Basilica - and the wine village of Sirince

Or simply get as far as Kusadasi ...............

I can suggest suitable accommodation if that might help ...... please pm me if you are interested.

Just to say that you will find that you will not be able to drive as fast on Turkish roads (unless motorways) than in the UK. You may also find - as we did - that the road surface is far too smooth (near Izmir!) and can increase your risk of skidding in hot or in wet weather. However petrol stations are PLENTIFUL!!
