Any advice for a newbie. Never been abroad (other than touring round France and one trip to Barcelona) so new to the package holiday thing.
I am travelling with my husband, my 15 yr old and 3 yr old girls. I am going to stay self-catering in Anemi Apartments in Paphos and wondered if anyone has any advice re: best places to buy food (to cook in apartment) and also good restaurants, trips, car hire, best beaches etc.
Thanks.
Papantoniou's supermarket for 'eating in' food. Behind McDonalds, about a 10 minute walk from Anemi.
It's a 'proper' supermarket, not a mini-market.
Paphos Eating. Dozens of places to eat reviewed.
Petsas for car hire. Email them for a quote.
Best beaches, Paphos? Your having a laugh. Beaches is something Paphos itself does not do.
You'll have to travel out to Coral Bay to the north (regular busses), Pissouri or Avdimou Bay to the east (car required.) If you have a 4X4, Lara Beach to the north, beyond Coral Bay.
Trips:
Troodos and the mountain region, Kakopetria, Pedhoulas.
Polis and Latchi.
Pissouri.
Kourion, Temple of Apollo, Kolossi Castle and Lady's Mile Beach.

Don't mention it. Happy to help.
I've only joined the forums today so appreciate the advice.
We are collecting a car at the airport and returning to the airport so getting around isn't a problem. Staying just north of Paphos and any advice on places to visit by "normal" car would be appreciated.
We are visiting in mid/late february so I assume a lot will still be closed for the winter? Does this apply to restaurants etc or do they tend to stay open??
Dave
I get a bit frustrated sometimes after offering advice and getting no response.
Although Paphos is a holiday area it is also a residential town. There will be many places that close for the winter, but there will still be plenty of places to eat.
With a car you can get out to the many villages that surroung Paphos.
Kathikas has a few restaurants/tavernas that get good reviews.
Tala is another village with good eateries, Pegia is another, Mandria another.
The link above and this one should help you find good places to eat.

I have done a good stretch of Lara Bay in a normal saloon, but it's not for the faint hearted.
All the rest of my recommendations are fine in a normal saloon.
Another day out would be Polis and Latchi.
From my experiences on other forums I know what you mean. Thanks for that.
I aren't "faint hearted" so am prepared to give it a try - you should see the roads I was driving on in a Fiat Panda in Rhodes!! - so recommend away.
I have been told that I may not appreciate Paphos because I may find it "too English" (my worst nightmare when on holiday - if I want English I'll stay here!) so was intending getting out and about. Troodos mountains have been suggested as a daytrip but any other suggestions - not just eateries - would be appreciated.
Cheers
Dave
All the places I mentioned previously, plus:
Kykkou Monastery
Fikardou
Omodos
Vouni Donkey Sanctuary
All easily accessable from the Paphos area.
Further afield:
Lefkara (Beware the hard-sell)
Larnaca
Nicosia
Cape Greco
Ayia Napa
The last 2 are quite a distance from Paphos, about 170km
Mark
Thanks for those ideas Mark
Are they both the greek side of the great divide??
Dave
PS I take it the OH doesn't read these threads - or are you sooooooo dead when she does???
Lofou is just north of Limassol, off the road up to Troodos, and Fikardou is between Troodos and Nicosia, so both are in the south.
I tend not to use the Greek half/Turkish half terminology. I prefer north/south of the Green Line. Cyprus is Cypriot.

Sorry - I stand corrected
I always make 4 lists when we go over. We do a 2 centre holiday, 1 week in Larnaca and another week in Pissouri.
One list for each place of things to do and trips out, another list for each place of places to eat at.
When I get home I change the colours on the list for places we liked and would go again or didn't like and wouldn't. Anywhere we did not get to stay black.
Mark
We've only been let down once - in Sidari, Corfu - so are probably reasonably good judges.
However, we never ignore recommendations.
Regards
Dave
Snap! Worst meal I've ever had, Benitses, Corfu. Cold spag bol. Stood up and walked off without a word after the first fork-full.
you near bar st so not to far from the main harbour as you walk down towards the front you will see a supermarket called papantonios thats your best bet for shopping and the bars and restaurants nr you are quite good fun so you wont get board!!!
we are arriving mid feb 2009 and staying at the Hilltop gardens appartments
Paps supermarket would be about at the bottom of the "Bars.." list is, where Memories Bar and the Keg and Barrel Pub are listed i.e. off the map.
Looking at Hilltops website you are way way waaay out of Kato Paphos on the Tombs of the Kings Road. Probably a good couple of miles from the harbour area.
