My own opinion, no way would I go back to Samui, I went in the 90's it was paradise went back in 2000 , the Irish pubs and Starbucks had moved into Chaweng 
Went again in 2004 stayed in Maenam, which was more unspoilt , then again in 2006 to Laem Set, I was horrified , what had happened to all the lovely coconut trees?? IMHO it is far too built up , I would only fly into Samui to go on to Phangan or Tao.
