Thankyou.
We spent a bit of time in Sofia as part of a tour in 2007. Have a look at my trip report at the bottom of this topic and the following page -
Thanks Corinne. Looking forward to it.
Well, we're back. One rainy day and mostly very cold but we enjoyed very much.Food was very cheap and tasty and it was easy to get around the city by tram.We were fascinated to find that you post your mail into a box on the side of the trams.Taxis were also very cheap and plentiful. All in all, a great city.
Glad you liked it What would you recommend seeing and doing?
We went to the rotunda, a small church entirely surrounded by the Sheraton hotel! It seems that when they started excavating they found this and there are plenty more buildings still buried. The Alexander Nevski cathedral is imposing---------if the sun is shining. There is a daily flea market in front of it but we thought it was a lot of tat to be honest. The contrast between the new buildings and those from the Communist regime is very marked. Lots of good places to eat and lovely wine very cheap. We saw the changing of the guard, not such a big ceremony as ours though.Basically we wandered around and visited a couple of markets. It poured with rain the day we went to one market so I bought a pair of real leather boots for 30 levs, around £15!!The city is not geared to tourism and only the younger people spoke any English but our friend speaks enough Bulgarian to get by so we had a great time.
Many thanks for the update Anne and glad to hear you had a great time
