This was when they started to charge for beds.
If in doubt check with the shack owner (not the boys on the beach).
We asked 3 years ago if we were going to be charged and were told no as we were regular customers. We had to use beds "owned by the shack".

Quite right - well said.
My friend has just returned from calangute and she said because there are so few tourists there, they are trying to ripp off the ones that are there to make their money up! To be honest i beggining to wish we had cancelled and booked to go somewhere else, with everything i keep hearing!!
Don't worry spaldy, you will have a great holiday, don't let all this talk put you off - you WILL find a free sunbed as they want your custom far too much - let them know that they need you more than you need them and if that dont work, put your towel on the sand like we used to do.
we got charged for sun beds the other year when we had a day at morjim. It wasnt advertised that there was a fee just that when I checked the tab at the end of the day for the drinks and lunches that we had had there was a 'sundry' charge on the bill. So I asked what it was for and was told - 'sunbed charge'. To which i picked up the wallet that I had been given with the bill in took out the tip money that i had left inclusively in the wallet and just left the money for the food and the sun beds.
we went to Bono,s shack a few times this visit and we did get told the beds were 50 rupees each but the good thing was there were no sellers and this was bliss his beds were really good and has great big cushions ..but after a day or so we did notice .....chips were 80 rups everyone else was 30 ..kingfisher was 100 elsewhere else 70 spring rolls were 150 ..70 at all the other shacks I dont think we go out of bono's for less than 900rupees where as in other shacks the most we paid was 500 ..so much as it is a very good shack he is ripping the a** out of it I wont go back there ever again ...colleen
thanks colleen will look out for that shack and avoid it...

Excellent news - looks like I might get a bed; and a table for lunch at a reasonable time this season.

I had a feeling this may happen. If they try it with me i'm not going to mince my words. That is completely out of order!
When in Baga i'll stay in my usual shack where they know me and wont take the ****!
Irishcolleen is completely correct in everything she says about Bono's, lovely shack, but you definitely pay thru the nose for it. As Irishcolleen pointed out to me, and its true, they have the most comfortable beds to lie on, but they are taking the p*ss with their excess prices.
Its their loss not ours.
Its called Bistro's. It doesn't look that fancy but the food is good and well priced never been ill from there and i've known all the shack lads for 3 years now and they're great and trustworthy! They always save a few beds on the front row for me.

Max,
don't like your reply, are you trying to be sarcastic or what, as I believe irishcolleen is only trying to inform us of the rip off merchants...jxk8

my thoughts too

Despite what Irishcolleen says - I'm quite sure that when I'm there in January, Bono's will be as busy as ever.
He has his regulars who are happy to pay a bit more for the cleanliness, the paved floor, the comfy seats and the nice toilets.
As for 100 Rs for 2 beds - I'm sick reading about the overtipping done by many on here. These are the ones who say "it's only 100 Rs - that's nothing."
Have mentioned before about paying for sunbeds at Ganesh shack - 50rps, not going to break the bank is it ? and v good business sense in my opinion (yes they do pay a licence for these - why do you think you see so many shack boys running up the beach with sunbeds so the police don't count the excess ?). Shacks either side of him were free but food and drink prices were well up on his to compensate, if you can find a shack that doesn't charge and has cheap food and drink prices - well done and best of luck to you.
As regulars each year along with many others who use the shack every day this charge is not passed on, also if you arrange with him to be picked up from the airport (and taken back) this is also not charged (as long as you use the shack daily), he knows you are going to spend and we always leave a very good tip for all the staff which all goes in to the pot, so the end of the season he should have recovered some losses.
This season is a disaster for all shack owners, so those who never charged have no choice but to do so, to pay all licence fees, wages etc..
Have noticed certain posters (not just from this thread) that whinge about being charged, but then are quite happy to go to resorts around Europe and pay £4 for a bed and brolly !!
Spike.
I'm going back in 7´th of February 2009 and I'm glad for the purification of the athmosfere. There will be much more people I feel comfortable in discussing how amazing country it is. The People, with all the problems there is, with smiles on their faces, all the beauty of the Nature aso. 50 rupees per bed per day ..... coomon! If this is something you count as a reason to change a Holiday destination?! What was total sum of your Holiday??? OK. People are different, with different possibilities to spend a money. But me personally.... if I have problem with 50 rupees per bed per day .... I would stay at home. If you will have later grievance about the ripp off and spoiled beauty sleep, killing emotions of 14 days with extreme beauty, delishious food and enjoyable conversation with one of the best people on earth, do consider the change of destination. You, who have problems, will have my sympathy. This was an irony.

Also to bear in mind is the cost for repairs to the beds and the mattresses and the umbrellas have to paid for as well. I have seen on many occasions people coming to the beach with their own food and drink and not buying anything from the shack. With the restrictions on the number of beds a shack can now have, the last thing the owners will want is people taking up the beds and not spending any money.
and BTW how much do they charge for sunbed in England? per day?
I'm surprised its taken them this long to charge for beds to be honest. We had to pay last October as there were so few beds out and the shacks were still under construction. We ate at the shack and would have a few drinks but also would wander up the beach and have a drink elsewhere without feeling any guilt. We only paid 100 rupees for two beds ( and the flying dolphin sunbeds were lovely).
