I was wandering if i need to barter in Zante when shopping..As we did
in Turkey..I don't want to make a fool of myself if this is not done in
Zante ..Any advice will be welcome.
bartering to the extent of that in turkey is not the norm in Greece, sure haggle over expensive items like hire cars jewelry and the like but not on the everyday items
never bothered there just paid the asking price .
You can haggle, just in moderation, i think it is more in turkeys culture to batar for goods where as in cyprus it is not the norm really, i always try and ask for some money off though or something extra after all you don't get anything without asking
Having holidayed on Zante a few times i've always found that after visiting a local shop a few times you soon build a friendly relationship with the owners and in my experience you don't need to barter as they'll give you a bit of discount or chuck in a few extra bottles of water or wine with your shopping.
For families or groups definitely haggle on excursions and with the restaurants but, in a very friendly and fun manner, ask if Granny can go free or free deserts for the kids. Zante is a fun place and the locals do have a wonderful sense of humour and if you can make them laugh with your haggling you normally get something.
Having typed that above i will say that i have only holidayed early in the season May and June and maybe after five months off they're glad to see some happy holidaymakers spending.
