Hi all,
Has anyone booked a Safari independently for 09, and if so, please could you advise me how much the price was (if you don't mind)?
We're looking at (hopefully) going on a 3 day, 2 night safari to the Masai Mara in October 09 from Mombasa & have been quoted £635 per person staying at the Fig Tree Camp. This was for a shared safari (up to 6 people in a 4x4) and excludes the cost of drinks, tips etc
I know from posts on TripAdvisor that the cost of fuel, entry to Game Reserves etc has gone up, but this quote was nearly £200 more than the price advertised a few months ago with one company.
If anyone has any recommendations, advice etc, I'd be very grateful for any help
Thanks,
Ang
Hi, we have booked a package with First choice going at the end of May. We are doing a 4day/3night safari, from memory the price for the safari was £360 each. The girl at the TA made a cock up and only booked one safari so we ended up getting the other one at half price! Not sure if this is any help but we are going to Tsavo.
Thanks for the reply
We've booked the main holiday package through First Choice, but would prefer to book independently if possible, as this means we wouldn't need to vacate our hotel for the time that we would be on safari.
Tsavo West is another one we have been looking at & have had a quote for £347 each for a 3 day, 2 night road safari staying at the Salt Lick Lodge with the sole use of the van for both of us. This seems a good price but I think I might try to hold out for a cheaper price for the Masai Mara.
Hope you have a great time!

Can you tell me why they want you to vacate the hotel room for the duration of the safari, if it is only 3 days as | would not like to have to do that.If you have paid for a 2 wk holiday in a hotel I cant see why it is necessary? We are going in July for 2wks with Thomson but so far have only looked at the Safari side of things. We would probably like to go to Tsavo for 2/3 days.
Apparently, if you book your safari through them, as part of your holiday package, they require you to vacate your room. I'm not sure why either, especially because you've already paid for it for the week / 2 weeks etc. Probably just their t's and c's, but I think that's unfair too.
That's why we've decided to book independently with a local Kenyan company.
Hope this helps

Yes thanks Ang we will probably do the same. When are you going?
The Kenyan company I e-mailed about this has also had numerous good reviews on tripadvisor from people in the UK, which has helped put our minds at ease
Whereabouts have you booked? Have a great time in July!
We are going to the Southern Palms in Diani. Which Kenyan operator are you going to Tsavo with?
Glorious Safaris is the one we've chosen, as they were the cheapest. Unfortunately the Masai Mara is working out to be far too expensive. Never mind, looks like we'll just have to save up & go again at some point
Thanks gobofraggle! I will have a look at the one you mentioned.I am sure the place is teeming with willing safari tour operators when you get there but it is good to book at home I think .Enjoy!
Also, we only have to pay a 20% deposit to them (they have a UK bank account with HSBC) & then pay the balance once we have arrived in Kenya. They will send you a booking confirmation with all the information on & then arrange to meet you in your hotel on the day you arrive to go through everything with you - what time you leave to do the safari etc etc.
can anyone tell me which hotels freddie will take you from
Do you mean Freddy Muthengi? If so, he'll arrange to pick you up from any hotel you're staying in Mombasa.
Hope this helps,
Ang
