We saw lots of dolphins or porpoises (not sure which) in the Forth off the East Neuk of Fife in October. The following day we saw them off St Andrews in the Tay.

At Monkey Mia, a National Marine Park half way up the West Australian coast, at set times of the day, the wild dolphins come in to be fed. It's tightly controlled by the park staff and you wade in up to your knees, and the dolphins swim round you. The park rangers told us that if there is any pregnant tourists the dolphins make a bee line for them first, even if they are unaware that they are pregnant , something to do with hormones on your skin surface they said. Dont know if it's true or not, but a magical place nevertheless. Unlike the barrier reef of Queensland, only accessable by boat this one is directly offshore and you swim out to it from the beach. Could have been either! I live on the Firth of Tay and both dolphins and porpoises are regular visitors - as are grey and common seals. The daughter of friends is a member of the local long distance open water swimming club and the other summer she did a sponsored swim across the Firth and was accompanied by both a the safety boat and a pair of dolphins throughout! They joined her as she swam out of the harbour at Broughty Ferry and only left her as she entered the inner harbour at Tayport. Magical! Apparently she could hear them 'whistling' to each other but never actually got a good view of them herself so I was glad that we had photos to show her just how close they were swimming alongside her.

Both dolphins and porpoises can be seen regularly further north on the Moray Firth too but this can sometimes be distressing because the dolphins can frquently be seen killing the porpoises by repeatedly tossing them up into the air out of the water. It's not clear whether they are killing them on purpose or whether this is just boisterous horseplay on the part of the 'big boys' getting out of hand and resulting in injury to the smaller species. Either way it seems to be a growing problem and I seem to remember a marine biologist being reported as saying it might be linked to growing competition for food in the Firth as both populations are increasing.

RE seeing them elsewhere, we've never failed to have really good sightings when on boat trips from La Gomera in the Canaries and you don't even have to go on a special dolphin and whale watching trip. Just get the old Armas ferry over to La Gomera from Los Christianos on Tenerife and get a good seat outdoors close to the prow of the ship and you stand as good an chance as any of seeing both.

We've seen the seals off Pittenweem and Anstruther. 2 or 3 years ago my elder daughter and I saw a seal in Pittenweem harbour. It was a really wild day and it was sheltering in amongst the fishing boats.

Have saw plenty, on different occasions on boat trip from Puerto Rico in Gran Canaria. Saw loads and loads on trip from Gibraltar too, also some of coast of Majorca, can't remember where we sailed from though.

The best one I saw was on the boat trip from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay in the Clyde Estuary. :tup

Australia again. Sat in a restaurant on Hamilton Island and there were 2 water gullies going all round the restaurant. Suddenly this loud whoosh and 2 dolphins came down the gullies sat on their tails then swam around a pool and went out again. We thought they were captive but they went out to sea.
Seen them off Gibraltar quite a few times as we live nearby and when we went on holiday to Goa one year they were jumping just off shore early every morning.
