Heloooo all. Just booked for 24th June and will be our first time in rhodes. have visited a few greek isles before and loved them. staying in the Kassandra apartments. got a good deal and have read a few reviews so not expecting a palace. But just want somewhere to chill for a couple of days and a good base to get out and about - but dont want to be smack in the middle of everything.
Its Mrs.Tipsy's birthday whilst we're away, so was wondering, what are the best restaurants in and around the area. We have been know to partake in one or several alcoholic beverages also, so what type of bars are there around. We love to sit and watch the world go by with a bottle o' wine or two, but is there anything any livelier in case the mood takes us???
Really looking forward now the count-down is on. OOoo, love doing boat trips etc, what do you recommend?
Any hints or tips would be brilliant. Many thanks
Had to do Google search as you didnt say where your apartments are on Rhodes. The west coast would not be my choice .Stony beaches & windy. Trianda & Ixia next door are all hotels , like a concrete jungle. Totally lacking any character.Could be anywhere.Nothing about them says this is Greece .
Please don't be put off. You are only a short ride away from the Town. In June it can still be very warm and you may be grateful for the breeze.Hiring a car is a good idea as there is so much to see on Rhodes. If you go into the Town and go to Mandraki harbour you can book boat trips to Symi, Thilos,Nissiros or Kos.There are many bars in Ialyssos where you can enjoy a bottle of wine and watch the sun go down.Rhodes is a fantastic island and I'm sure you'll have a lovely time.
sorry no I didnt put where the apartments were did I. whats the difference between trianda/trianta and lalysoss are they all different areas in the same place??
We were in kos last year, and that too was quite breezy, but oh we were so glad of it to be honest.
Any tips on the best restaurants in the old town??
Many thanks again.
They are both on a busy stretch of road. Trianda is really just a resort of hotels, bars restaurants but there is a bit more village life in Ialyssos. As I said before, the Town is quite near and taxis are reasonable and plentiful. There are many restaurants that are excellent, both in the new and old towns. Really you need to wander around and if you see lots of Greek folks eating in a place you'll know it's probably very good. There are also plenty of places that serve British food if that's what you prefer.Whatever your taste I'm sure you'll be spoilt for choice on Rhodes. It's a beautiful island full of friendly people and I hope you'll have a wonderful holiday. Anne
Vrachos is a very nice restaurant in Trianda located right on the sea front with great sunsets for evening dining.
I wouldn't take the negative comments to heart, tpebops is a big Faliraki fan and that resort doesn't suit everybody - each to their own i say. Whilst it's not my favourite part of the island (i'm a Lindos addict!) it is a good base and a place you can chill out so it matches your requirements i'd say. When i was working on the island my parents stayed in Ixia and were thankful for the cooling breeze, it's pretty warm by the end of June, in fact they prefer the west coast.
As i remember Kassandra is in between Ixia and Trianda and of the two i'd say Trianda has more atmosphere. Plenty of bars for you to sit and watch the world go by, just head for the traffic lights in Trianda and take the road down to the beach. The other side of the lights is more of a village and there was an excellent basic taverna just across from the Spa supermarket there. There weren't many livelier bars when i was based in the area but you're just a short bus or taxi ride from Rhodes Town where Bar Street (Orfandinou St) is always lively.
I'm sure you'll have a great time
Oh and forgot to mention Trianda/Trianta are the same place just different spelling (named after the 30 houses in the village though much bigger now). Ialyssos is the general area, people often refer to Ixia or Trianda as Ialyssos.
We were in Kefalos, Kos last year that was perfect. Got a breeze there too, which yes, we were glad of. We dont like too much hustle and bustle, but its nice to know its not too far away it you feel the urge.
Is it easy and safe enough to get a taxi back to trianda from Rhodes town late on at night - Im not talking bout 'stupid o'clock - but you know midnight or so?? Also how much is an average price.??
Really looking forward to the trips and excursions too. Is there a local tour operater to use, as dont want to be ripped off by the reps?! Sorry for the million and one questions, but so excited now. Really must calm down, got ages to go yet.
Thanks again everyone.
you must make time and visit the old town , you will be spoilt for choice where to eat and drink , as for the trips we went over to Symi for the day and we booked it down in the harbour again you will be spolit for choice on where to go and on what boat , we also done the Llindos trip . We went in August and the breeze was lovely , the coast line is a beautiful walk , we walked from rhodes town in to trianda , stopping for light refreshments on the way Even though we were half board we did eat out and never had a bad meal , even my hubby who is a fussy eater on hols . taxi's are a fair price and a safe way to get back in the evenings
you will have a great time
Taxis are perfectly safe and all metered. There's several taxi ranks in town or you can flag one down in the street - i'd expect to pay somewhere around 8 euros.
This website has great info about taxis, buses, boats, etc if it's your first visit to the island http://www.ando.gr/eot/eng/info.htm
Rhodes isn't just warm in June, if last year is anything to go by (40 degrees daytime temps still late 20s early 30s in the evenings). If we didn't have the airconditioniong in both the room and the car we may have struggled.
You will probably be told you should've booked for the week earlier - we'll be there for the open air rock festival on the weekend before you arrive.
My preferences are for areas like Lindos, Stegna, Haraki etc but we did enjoy visits to Rhodes Old Town (if you are there around 12-30 on a sunday I believe there is a parade by the Knights of St John. Unfortunately we didn't arrive until 1pm and missed it ) and Faliraki and one of the corner tavernas in Archangelos is a great place to have a cooling drink and watch the world go by.
We didn't find Faliraki to be the 18/30 resort we had been warned it was (look out for Subway and KFC!!) and we enjoyed our night there. Daytimes we toured and visited all manner of places. If you can get to some of the Inland villages you will find a whole different way of life - well worth the effort.
Loads of boat trips are available from various venues around the Island which usually include either a barbecue or a stop at a resort with shore side tavernas. Also, you can hire your own motor boat and spend the day travelling wherever you fancy.
I'm sure you will enjoy Rhodes and be back again

Im sure I'll have a few more questions as the time gets nearer. So thanks you lot - you've been great. Keep the ideas coming if you think of any more though.
If you like Rock music you could always head for Colorado Club in Rhodes Town, they have a live band on every night.
Thanks will definatley try that one. We like all kinds of music - rock, country, jazz, but you just cant beat live music, even karaoke makes me laugh - well, sometimes anyway.
