good one Alfie,
we did the same thing in 2006.
we spent the whole time just walking and people/building watching. Did a short hop across the Grand Canal just to say we had been on a Gondola(think it cost about 6 euros)
have agreat time

Anyone got any recommendations from recent trips to Venice, hopefully in the San Polo area, please? We're hoping to find some typical venetian food, away from the touristy menus. When its a short trip, you don't get many chances to find the best restaurants. Our first visit to Venice, so really looking forward to it!
I'd be interested in any recommendations also as we are going in March.
Our stay in Venice was only on a bed and breakfast basis, so we had the opportunity to try our some of the local restaurants etc. To try and keep costs down, at lunchtimes we mainly bought sandwiches and slices of pizza from take-aways and cafes, followed by some ice cream in the afternoon. It was easy to find places to buy these things at reasonable prices, even near San Marco. In the evenings, we mainly chose restaurants with tourist menus, meaning that we never spent more than 25 euros per person, including drinks. The restaurants we went to were Restaurant Malibran (near the Malibran Theatre - quite big with outside seating), Hotel Florida (on the Dorsoduro side of the Grand Canal, a few doors down from Rialto Bridge) and Trattoria Antica Sacrestia (just round the corner from the Casa Querini). Antica Sacrestia was our favourite - the food was beautiful and the portions were huge.
we are flying into treviso next week and arrive early morning want to stay in venice or near on an overnight
we need to hire a car (5 day hire recommendations appreciated) as we are then having to go south for the rest of our trip
also any does don't when driving (have driven abroad before but not italy)

any hints tips ect greatly appreciated as it is our first time
Alfie wrote:Last week we booked a weekend break to Venice in February. We booked with Expedia, can't believe the price! It was £345 for BA flight from Gatwick + 3 nights 2 people in a hotel on the grand canal, which in our guide book is listed under the expensive hotels! When I have looked before the prices of the hotels in the centre have made it an expensive break - so snapped this one up.
There were other breaks available to other cities for similar prices.
Wheras we booked for 2 adults
flights with Ryanair £16.04 (flights 4p card payment suppliment £16)
and a hotel with Hostelworld for €54
going in 4 weeks and going to be Japanese Tourists (pictures of EVERYTHING) for 2 days
I have just booked 3 nights in Venice for next May, we are flying into Marco Polo airport. Can anyone recommend accomodation that is easily reached from the airport and within walking distance of the main sights of Venice. I would love an old world atmosphere, affordable, quiet at night, and I would love to be able to eat breakfast outside. I'm not hard to please!
Everywhere is easily walkable (sailable by boatable) so just get a hotel that you like the look of near to a waterbus stop. We particularly like the Cannaregio area with it's cosmopolitan feel.

This is the thread I started after we went http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=127305
Venice is very easy to navigate with a simple map and a waterbus pass
Remember I have a spinal injury and apart from the fact I got cold and so much more pain than I would have liked I can say I've been although I will not go back
We stayed at Mestre a 10 minute bus ride out of Venice This is the thread I started after we went http://www.holidaytruths.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=127305

Thanks for the replies. You get baffled with the choice of hotels and don't know where to start.

We're going to Venice next week for the first time, just for a few days and was hoping you could tell me if there are any cash service tills that take english cards, as in other european countries. Oh we are staying on the Lido by the way.
Any info would be much appreciated.
Thanks

EXCEPT
do not forget to tell your bank where you are going had to get my card un blocked so we could eat as they wouldn't let me have any money until I rang them
Any recommendations gratefully received.
must have a lift. Stairs are no good.
Don't mind where abouts it is as long as it's on Venice itself and not Mestre etc. Medium price if possible too.
