I'm a freelance journalist writing a feature for a glossy monthly magazine called "I downsized my holiday"
I'm looking for a woman aged 30-55ish who had a cheaper holiday than usual last year because of the recession. Perhaps you camped for the first time, swapped Mauritius for Majorca, or ditched Spain in favour of Devon?
If you're interested, please email judyyorke@montimedia.co.uk. There is a small fee for taking part.

you be better wating for this years response, as last year wasn't so bad
I went the other way and upsized, I went DIY and had a longer holiday (2.5 Weeks), this year booked for 3 weeks and cheaper again.
No change here. I did Antigua, Turkey and Finland (Lapland) last year and I'm off to Kenya and Turkey this year, with somwhere in between and probably something similar in 2010. I know times are hard, but they've had no effect on me as yet (he says touching a huge piece of wood!!).
Well I'm the right age, but I too had more holidays than usual last year. I think next year will be the crunch year, especially for those with children.
me 2, i went abroad last yr 6 times and have 4 booked this year so far, not sure how we will be affected next yr
Not in the right age bracket, but I always travel on a budget
Well we certainly downsized big time this year we had to cancel our hols due to losing both our jobs what a downer that was never mind we are hoping things will pick up and we can go later in the year..
We have also downsized this year only 2 hols abroad booked now, been having three or four for the last 15 years,OH is self employed and its been dire for the last 4 months, but suddenly its picked up this week and looks like were on a roll,BUT hes threatened me now not to book a holiday for next month,(weve always gone away in March) Shucks!!!
sleep r us - so sorry to hear that. It's bad enough when one job is lost. I hope things pick up soon for you. Crispy - such is life when you're self employed. My SIL has his own plumbing business and things were tight last winter. This year because of the bad weather he hasn't had a minute to himself and is shattered.
Thanx for the concern Helen we were gutted we should have been going on the 5th march for 3 weeks WHEN we find another job each my first paypacket will be spent on a deposit for a holiday...
This year I will probably do only one, but maybe two if I can save productively. Lack of bonus and no yearly pay rise has made a little difference.
Agree with the others, last year shouldn't have been a problem for anyone in relation to recession, this year and next a different kettle of fish for many.
sleep_r_us, fingers crossed for you and yours that you find something soon.
I think your question my have been better if aimed at 2009 holidays as lots of people are only just beginning to feel the effects of the recession.
For many last year was the same as usual, I went on two long haul and five short European holidays, one more long haul than usual. This year may be different as I want to buy a new car, so will probably forgo one or more but as I never book my holidays a long time in advance I haven't looked into anything for this year yet. So really at the moment the recession hasn't affected me but what the future holds, who knows.

However, many people did make changes to their holiday in 2008 because rising fuel and food prices in particular left them with much less disposable income, and the Northern Rock crisis did make some people nervous the financial trouble was brewing! I believe many more people were camping etc last year to save cash
We went ther other way. Instead of our usual European self catering jobby we did the fully Canadian Rockies tour and 7 night cruise to Alaska! However in 2009 we are back to the usual!
Last year i went away 5 times. 2009 means a week in April so far and no other commitmetns. Decided to focus on reducing my CC debt instead.
Your story sounds interesting - would you be around for a 5 minute chat to find out a bit more?
I've tried to PM you but I think as a Newbie I'm not allowed to!
Would you mind emailing me - judyyorke@montimedia.co.uk with your number and a good time to chat? Or just drop me an email and I can ask you a couple of questions via that if you'd rather!
Thanks a lot
Judy
