You don't say where you're staying, but my sister & I enjoyed a lovely trip over to the Island of Spinalonga, which used to be a leper colony. It was a lovely boat trip with a bbq lit on the beach. I can't remember how much we paid, but it couldn't have been much or we wouldn't have gone. We also took the Happy Train up into the mountains - stunning scenery & we had lunch at a lovely little restaurant where the locals ate.
If you're in Stalis/Malia/hersonissos you can take the Happy Train up into the mountain village for just a few punds and you're there for a good few hours. We really enjoyed.
Just remembered if its your cup of tea, hubby went off horse riding through the olive & lemon groves for a morning. They were given lunch & free drinks at the ranch
Hi, yes forgot to mention, we will be staying in the Chania area. Thanks for the trip ideas
There are lots to see in that area though. It has natural beauty as well as places to visit. Chania has a wonderful harbour, many Venitian influences, tiny narrow streets and some really impressive buildings. East of Chania, after you pass Souda (the harbour of Chania) and extending almost all the way to Georgioupolis is the region of Apokoronas. It is one of the greenest regions of Crete (mainly olive trees) between the sea and the northern slopes of the White Mountains. Also worth a visit is Lake Kournas, the island's only freshwater lake,
There is also the ruins of ancient Aptera located on a hill above the bay of Souda. Founded in the 7th century BC, Aptera was one of the largest city states in Crete and was continuously inhabited until an earthquake destroyed it in the 7th century AD.
A monastery was established there in the 12th century. At the north-western end there is a Turkish fortress with superb views of Souda bay. SO LOTS TO SEE
