I think this topic is already up and running but is probably in the archives now. I remember posting about my worst holiday quite a long time ago. I wonder it the mods could merge. I know there is a more recent 'best holiday' topic but there's definitely a 'worst hol' thread too somewhere

I can't say I've ever had a bad holiday. Of course some are better than others, but holidays are there to relax and enjoy. A 'bad' holiday is better than a good day at work regardless!!
at the end of the day a holiday is what you make of it . Now if you were asking about worse hotels you have stayed in that would be a different story.
hi llindy i am intrested in the worst hotels you have stayed in,and the worst conditions you had to endure during your holiday.because what i have found is when you to talk to most people that have just come back from their holidays, they have always got some nightmare story to tell.regards john
Has to be lloret when I was about 7, rained all the time, coach up to malgrat scary, but it was my 1st hol abroad with my mum..
Never had a bad holiday but I do find that the Greek coach drivers a bit scary, the drive like maniacs, on my way from the airport to our hotel in corfu, our coach driver was racing another down some winding roads, overtaking each other to keep in front. And then he pulls over jumps out and throws up!!!! . Great start to my holiday, I am glad to say I have had no other experiences like it.
my worst holiday was at malgrat-de-mar,in spain .The hotel we stayed in had building work going on both sides,it was like staying on a building site.the food was bad,it was the only holiday i have had where i have lost weight.the beach was infested with ants, that liked to munch on you, giant lumps all over you, with plenty of itching, great fun.
Ive never really had a bad holiday apart from the apartments we stayed in at Lanzarote but after complaining for over a week the rep eventually got us moved to a better hotel other than that like has already been stated a holiday is what you make it
smelly leaky caravan on site just outside blackpool many years ago, the kids didn't mind though. blackpool was great fun pity about the caravan xphx
I'm glad to say I've never had a bad holiday. My least favourite was Menorca about 15 years ago but that was years before HT so I hadn't done my homework. The hotel was fine but the resort was very quiet and remote with nowhere to go in the evenings. We were self catering so didn't have the pleasure of evening's entertainment and there weren't any bars in the area. Still we made the most of it and spent loads of time on the beach and hired an open top jeep to get around the island, which our children really enjoyed.
Faliraki. One of the holidays where you don't know where you're going 'til you get there. Mosquito-ridden and boiling, got savaged to near death by the flying monsters. And to make it worse the whole neighbourhood washed their cars from a hose-pipe permanently connected to the wall right outside our apartment, the mossies loved it. I was a blistered, raw mess - misery. Wasn't keen on Faliraki at all either.
hi phoebe your holiday in faliraki sounds like a real nightmare, with all those mosquitos munching on you.we had a similar problem with giant ants that lived on the beach in malgrat'de 'mar in spain, they bit you all over and left nasty scars,so much fun.
Not been anywhere I really hated, of course I like some places more that others. If I had to choose my least favourite place I guess it would be the Sao Joao / Montechoro area of Albufeira in Portugal. The resort was clean and tidy but it just lacked atmosphere. We went in Summer and the bars just seem so half hearted, the food in the restaurants was also pretty bad. I stayed in a fantastic apartment block called Vila Petra, very upmarket with all mod cons, but again come evening time, no entertainment in the bar (not even the slightest bit of background music) and just full of people talking about their handicap on the golf course. Not for me, but it wasn't a disaster by any means.
Probably Lloret de Mar, some years ago now & before i discovered HT. It was a choice of AI there, or no holiday at all. I came back feeling that all I'd seen for a week was our actual hotel - some high rise monstrosity, which looked out onto loads of other high rise monstrosities, which all looked the same.
hi helent Lloret.de.mar sounds a real sad place, what we hate about that type of holiday,is on the beach with all the rows and rows of sunbeds, and people fighting over them, truly sad.regards john
last year at the aegean dream hotel in turkey, we had a terrible time. food was awful, turkey every night, no kids menu, even the chips had spicey sauce, and no desserts suitable for kids like ice cream, rice pudding etc just turkish desserts, would have been nice to have had bit of a choice of international desserts, 1 night they even put cereals out for desserts !!!. we saw a few cockroaches . daughter cut her leg open on a sharp piece of metal pretruding out of the bar. my daughter had a local man grab her and her friends, trying to drag each 1 away and taking the ice cream off her friend, trying to get photos of them in their swimwear and then chasing my daughter to where we were and still trying to get photos of her, hubby chased him off and this was reported to hotel security, rep and manager who did nothing and shrugged saying they recognised this man and tell the girls to say no !!! the slide pool was flithy with grime around the edges and my swimsuit got covered it in when i leant against the side, some child went to the toilet in the pool, in my opinion it wasnt cleaned throughly nor emptied just some chemicals put in. , due to this serious concern over the man i have put another thread in complaints a while ago warning any parents going to turgutreis about this man. ros took on the hotel and i have been awarded compensation for this awful holiday
hi ellie-meg your holiday in turkey, last year sounds like every parents nightmare.i can just imagine what it was like, thank god your family are all right.I hope anyone thinking of going there reads your posting. regards john
everything, cameras, valuables, the lot. We were allowed a see-through plastic bag with our passports, tickets and money, and that was all!
To our relief, we arrived in one piece (and so did our checked-in valuables) but then I twisted my ankle very badly on the 5th night of the two weeks, coming down some badly-lit stairs with no handrail, and spent the rest of the holiday with my ankle the size of my thigh and just couldn't enjoy myself.
On top of that, 2006 was the big heatwave summer and temperatures were in the high 40ºC's every day (which didn't help my ankle); it was so hot even the locals were complaining and I spent the whole holiday sitting under a tree (and getting bitten by little spider things from the tree) or up to my chin in the swimming pool which was like a warm bath anyway... I had to set my alarm for 6:30 every morning to get the sunbed under the tree (there was only one tree) and all the sunbeds would be gone by 7:30 - there was probably one sunbed for every 6 guests at the hotel
Nothing against Turkey, and I would probably consider returning in the future, it was just a combination of factors which made me glad to be going home. We did try to have a good time, the hotel was nice, the entertainment and "club" atmosphere was great for all ages and the surrounding area was stunningly beautiful.
As for "stunningly beautiful" though - last summer (2008) we went to Crete and I thought it was the ugliest place I'd ever seen - maybe we were just in the wrong bit, we stayed in Ierapetra which is a working town which looks like when you see Iraq on telly... We took a day trip to Heraklion which wasn't much better and we visited Knossos which is the possibly the most desecrated ancient site in the world, all rebuilt in concrete, such a disappointment! I always refer to "Concrete Crete" now! However, the hotel was brilliant, right on the (concrete) beach, the entertainment and food was good and we had a great time.
Haven't had any bad holidays but if I had to choose then probably Turkey 2006. After looking forward to it for over a year, we woke up on the morning of our departure - 10th August 2006 - to an international security alert, arrived at the airport to horrendous queues and had to check-in To our relief, we arrived in one piece (and so did our checked-in valuables) but then I twisted my ankle very badly on the 5th night of the two weeks, coming down some badly-lit stairs with no handrail, and spent the rest of the holiday with my ankle the size of my thigh and just couldn't enjoy myself.
