We got back yesterday and are just waking up after a very tiring trip home (Damn night flights!)
Before I start, whoever was in Bourgas Airport on Tuesday morning and seen that old lady fall down the step and NOT get up to help (that was everyone!) be fully ashamed of yourselves! There was a bloke on a DS right next to her and he just gorped and then got on with his game whilst she was lay there in obvious pain. Her elderly husband was obviously in panic and didn't know what to do but eventually, someone from 50 yards away went and helped. She fell because loads of people were sat down on the steps and left only a little room for people to get to the coffee shop.
SO getting back to what I am here for! Sunny Beach has just gone to the top of my best holiday resorts ever, what a great place! I do now wonder why I read reviews and actually listen to them but on reflection the advice from the regular contributors to this and other forums helped us to not get ripped off, such as the below:
Cherry Sellers - Loads of them and they really were able to rip loads of people off who had not been reading the forums!
Ladies of the night - Only seen 1 all week and only because 6 english lads were giving her loads of grief
Mafia - No trouble at all, it was nice to see all the big cars etc but they kept well to themselves
Guys who try to get you in the restaurants & bars - Just say not tonight, no trouble at all
Closed facilities - Everything we came across was open (1st June to the 9th)
Bad weather - We had fantastic weather all week, with one day where it rained for 30minutes, we have great tans!
20Lev sunbeds on beach - Nope, we paid 7 Lev per bed but only had 1 bed and the rest of us stayed on beach towels.
Jellyfish in sea - We didn't see any but kids had a great time collecting small crabs, no one got bit
Mosquitoes - we didn't see any or have any bites until the last day when 1 had set up camp in our room
Pickpockets & Beggars - We did not see any at all nor see any dodgy behavior
Drunken Brits - Didn't see any trouble all week but we were in bed before 1am
All in all, very positive stuff and will be going next year for 2 weeks as the place is huge and didn't have enough time to look around everything nor did we do any tours or Khans tent etc.
Eating out
On reflection, I wish we went to Djannys every night as we went twice and each time the food was perfect and we never spent more than 60 lev per meal. Everywhere else was more expensive (Including Condor) and was not as good as Djannys. What seemed to make things expensive were kid's drinks where it was on average 12 levs for 3 drinks.
For 2 adults and 3 children (12, 5 & 4):
Djannys - Went twice had Rapier's, pizza's, chicken chop on clay, lots of beers. 1st time was 60lev, 2nd visit was 47lev.
Olimp - Spaghetti Bolognaise, Chicken on Clay, Beef burgers, Fish fingers & Chicken kid's meal, few beers. 70lev all food was OK except for the chicken that was like eating leather
Condor - Can't remember what we all had but spent about 80lev and neither I nor the wife felt it was anything to write about.
Far A - We had food from the promotional menu and all was nice but we still managed to spend 75lev and were expecting it to be 50lev
China Place - Best Chinese I have ever had but it was expensive as we didn't know how to order the food. As a tip to any potential visitors - 1 portion of rice will feed 2 to 3, 1 portion of food will feed 2 to 3 etc. We got 1 rice dish and 1 main course per person and it was far too much food for us to eat. It would have been best if we got 2 rice and 3 main dishes to share. 80lev spent
Malina - We ended up basing ourselves here as it was 89stonkis for 1 big beer and the staff were all friendly as well as they played all the sport when it was on. I went here myself for F1 and spent 11lev on a shopska salad and 6 big beers!
Unknown restaurant in Nessebar - We got ripped off here but the food was fantastic. Chicken Karvarma was 8.50 lev and the kids had stuff from the kids menu but it still came to 80lev, sums didn't add up but as it was so nice, we didn't argue.
Chicken Kebab (6lev) sellers and the 2lev pizza slices were all very nice
Jacket Potato sellers (6lev) were the best jacket potatoes ever.
Bars - Can't remember any names but this is where you can spend lots of money. 1 bar on the front where magic man Ali Baba (Very good I thought) was, we managed to spend 70lev in 45 minutes. Cocktails and soft drinks make it expensive. There was one bar however on the main road about 100 yards from Far A (Towards Flower Street) that was very cheap and during happy hour were doing very large local spirits at 1.20lev but 1 get 1 free.
Don't bother with the land train, walk, it will save you money
Bus service is great 1lev as expected and very regular
All if SB is very clean but be careful of broken slabs and pot holes
We seen some of the best hygiene ever by bar staff and cooks etc, very clean people we thought
Our hotel - Yavour Palace, it was actually a great place with an amazing choice of breakfast. I can not understand or see what people had in the past moaned about. It was the cheapest place when we booked and we was expecting a dive but it was great, we will have no trouble returning here and the rep (Wes) was also fantastic, very honest and not at all pushy with trips which is very unusual for a first choice rep. My only gripe was the usual with most places these days is that everyone reserves sun beds early so we had to pay 5lev per bed next door at the Kuban but it was quieter and for an extra 10lev, the kids can go on the slides but using the pools is free. We had to play the game at the end of the holiday though as we ran out of money.
Of the hotel, someone commented that it looks on to the back of a casino and erotic bar! We had one of those rooms! The Casino is just an amusment arcade with fruit machines and the erotic bar is the back entrance where all you see is the neon sign and a red car belonging to the bouncers, don't believe the hype, I was expecting good times on the balcony at night but was let down!
What an excellent report on your stay in Sunny Beach. Your comments will help those who are about to travel for the first time to Bulgaria and who have heard all the horror stories! I am sure this positive review will be welcomed by many who use this forum.
Personally I am a great fan of Golden Sands where we first visited years ago and have returned numerous times. I remember people were horrified when we said where we were going but glad to say many of them have tried it themselves now and have changed their minds about Bulgaria. Have also been a few times to Sunny Beach and had very enjoyable holidays.
Both resorts are definately worth visiting and if you are a family on a budget your money will go a long way.
Thanks for a really comprehensive and reassuring report!
Glad to hear that you enjoyed yourselves and had good weather.

Great report after reading some of the things being said .But have been going for years now and i know the first time was scary so you have done a great job of easing a lot of first timers going to Bulgaria .The people are brilliant and very helpfull .Its up to the person going to either make it a good holiday or sit about and moan But i cant wait three weeks come Saturday and i will be in Golden Sands
Hope you will do a review on Golden Sands once you have visited this summer. I will be interested to hear of any changes, new hotels, bars, restaurants, prices etc, etc. I know I am repeating myself here but I just love that resort.
Have a great time.
I will morh we just loveG/S and made lots of friends there and will be great to see them again.Going to shipka this year as loads of hotels keep vanishing from Balkans Book June
OOPS! My mistake. Think I switched the topic from Sunny Beach to Golden Sands. Never mind. See Balkan Holidays for 2010 on sale now.
Have been getting emails from them at least four times a week still not been for this year LOL
Just to add that most toilets, you have to pay 50 stonkies to use the facilities. A point to note here is that every toilet you had to pay a woman to use was all very clean and smelt clean. So I actually think it is a good idea as you get some men who are not at all toilet trained make a mess but here, they have to be careful as someone is watching them (Not literally!) meaning cleaner facilities. I have read loads of horror stories and was expecting holes in the floor and a wooden box but can assure any visitor that every toilet I had to use was very clean. Maybe people who have complained in the past have not been out in to city centres around the UK in the evening to fully understand how difficult it must be to preserve facilities, so in my opinion, charging here works.
Also, one major regret! I so wished I had learned some of the local lingo before we went. The resort has many europeon visitors so for the locals, it must be very difficult to be able to listen and understand what I was saying. Please try and learn how to say please, thank you, hello and cheers, I learnt nothing and struggled because of it in places.
great review, very helpful and reassuring.
I dont mind paying for the toilet as it is always they are always clean more than i can say for the uk
I totally agree, it helps a lot to try out some of the language. Our many BG friends teach us more phrases every time we go and we carry a dictionary!
Lets hope more first time visitors take heed of all the advise on these forums, so they too can avoid any pitfalls and scams!
