Although they drive on the same side of the road that we do (well, mostly!), driving standards are well below what you get in the UK, as you'll see by the number of fatal accidents that they report each year.
Even a minor accident can ruin yours and your family's holiday.
And it's not just the locals that you have to contend with, in all fairness. The combination of hot weather and booze available everywhere makes the tourists a major hazzard too.
I've driven in worse places, but I'd be inclined to stick with four wheels and a seat belt.
A few years ago when we were in Protaras we hired a car and the amount of scooters/bikes we passed with adults driving with young children none of them wearing helmets was frightening.
Make sure your travel insurance covers you before considering hiring.
