Go to Coronado, it's a great day out and a very interesting building. Go to Hob Nob hill for breakfast and have french toast, it's mouthwatering. God I wish I was there now.
We went in May and the weather was disappointing ( May Grey ) but it should be wonderful when you go.

Was in SD for 4 days in early May and the weather was superb. I would also recommend a day in Coronado theres a great beach for sunbathing and many nice little diners etc.

If you visit the Gaslamp area in the centre of town you will be spoilt for choice for restaurants and bars just wander round pick one you like. However I can recommend the Mexican food in the Tequila Bar and the Spanish Tapas in Sevilla (I think it was called).

Also went to the zoo, a nice day out but I am never that impressed by any zoos.

You might also consider a day trip to Tijuana in Mexico, we did not go as swine flu was a problem at the time and it was not considered safe, may be better now.

Also noticed you will be in LA make sure you visit Universal Studios and Venice beach both great days out.

Thanks guys. Will definitely visit Coronado in SD. Already planning to go to Universal in LA but will add Venice Beach to the itinerary too!
We're hiring a car - is it a nightmare driving in LA?

I wouldn't recommend it if you are a nervous driver but driving in the US is easier than the UK. There are no roundabouts to worry about and most cars (including rentals) are automatic. I'd try to avoid heading towards LA in the morning rush hour and avoid heading out of LA in the evening rush hour, otherwise it can take forever to get anywhere. As there will be more than one of you, you can use the car pool lane which can speed things up (but no guarantees!).

Venice Beach can be totally gridlocked on a weekend if it's sunny but I agree with datsun05 that it's a fun day out. Try to get there early and remember the sunscreen! My girlfriend and I got VERY sunburnt there a few weeks ago. She was much worse than I was... she was literally laid out on the bed, flat on her face, for nearly 3 days afterwards because of the pain. I keep trying to get her to go to Venice Beach (or indeed any beach) again but she gives me a look of horror and says No!

The Safari Park in San Diego was great as well as the zoo.

Six Flags was great fun with some serious coasters.

I love Coronado i could live there, we went to a pizza place and the some guys were having a takeaway. The pizza was so big that it took two of them to carry the box. They also had to tip it sideways to get it out of the door.

At seaworld swim with the dolphins it is about half the price of discovery cove in Orlando. My daughter has done both and said it was better in San Diego.
