Firstly it depends on which part of Alcudia. The port area and old town don't have a problem. The main tourism centre around Bellevue and neighbouring Playa de Muro are where the canals, lakes and wetlands are; hence the mosquitoes. The worst times for mosquitoes are spring and early autumn. In high summer they are far less active, but you still get pockets where they can be more abundant. As to treatments, there is so much advice, why not try the General Holiday Enquiries, Hints and Tips Forum where there is a huge thread on Mosquitoes.

Buy an mozzzie repellent spray containing 50% deet. You can get them in Superdrug or Tescos, they are the high strength ones. We used them in Bulgaria where people were getting eaten alive and we didn't have one bite. Also take antihistamines(excuse spelling) Clarityn or something, it means if you do get biten the bite won't be as swollen or painful. Hope this helps.

I stayed at the Marina Delfin Verde in July and I got a few bites, mainly sitting outside at night.

My friend swears by Avon Skin So Soft Dry Body Oil Spray- in the green bottle. I ordered some but it didn't arrive in time!

Came back from Muro area 3 weeks ago. I usually get bitten rotten and 1st year used a insect spray, but used Autan Family Care soft spray and boots kids non deet 'roll on' insect repell and no bites. Bought the sprays from website 'health in a jiffy; for £3 a can, was more expensive on other sites. Used one can in the two weeks using it at night. Did shower using lemon shower gel and had lemon soap as recommended by someone not sure if it worked. My son who used the boots stuff didn't roll on his leg one night and that one night got a bite. Also used the plug in at night when in but sprayed room with raid insect & mossie spray bought at tesco just before we went out for dinner. Walked upto Alcudia belvue area and strip and port of alcudia as well without bites. Hope that helps.

We were behind a family at check-in a couple of years ago who were covered in bites that were like boils, haven't seen anything like it!

My suggestion would be Sainsbury's Insect Repellant (contains Deet) £1.99 a can (similar Jungle Formula & Boots own make are between £3-£4). Friends swear by the Avon Skin-so-Soft spray but haven't personally tried it so can't comment.

Antihistamine tablets will also help if you do get bitten - instead of Clarityn One a Day use Tesco's own brand - both contacin 10mg Loratadine - Clarityn will cost you £2.99 a pack as opposed to 80p with Tesco's own. Both are non-drowsy

I am definately going to buy some jungle strength lotion and also a plug in for the room to hopefully keep the mozzies at bay. Going in 2 weeks time - can't wait.

Mrs Jollypostie and I can recommend a product called 'afterbite', you can buy it in pharmacies in the UK and abroad, stings a bit when you put it on and smells of amonia, but it works really well
