We visited Lismore, County Waterford and having read about Lismore Castle, decided to visit. We though that in addition to the advertised castle gardens, we might view part of the Castle - but regretfully, the castle is not open to the public.
The gardens are very nice, and located on two levels. The bottom level is a long walk through many different trees and climbers - the upper level contains the fruit/vegatable gardens together with lovely flower beds of many varieties. There is a tiny coffee shop with only two tables (one in the outer entry area - the other next to a reading room table and art books). Entry to a modern art gallery on the upper garden grounds is included in the entry fee.
Take note - while the Castle provides generous bus and car parking, they don't accept Laser/Credit cards and are privately managed (eg your Office of Public Works ticket will not work here). The closest ATM is over 4 - 5 blocks away on an incline (BANK OF IRELAND) and no directions to same were available from the staff. Be warned - bring cash.
There is a small park which lies between the Castle and the village which provides a lovely picnic spot - it has a running fountain and small playground. Lismore itself is a pretty town to walk through.
