Algarve restuarants had lunch specials by the Marina for €5 (chicken and chips) but then spoilt it by charging €3 for one of those tiny bottles of water and €3.50 for a can of coke.

We are just back ourselves and we found the restaurant prices basically the same as they were last year in Majorca - it was the poor Euro rate that made the prices high.

It was things like paying into the waterparks and gokarting and watersports that really scared us though - and we found we needed a lot more money than we did in Crete last year.

It wont put us off going back becuase we love Majorca, however the days of a "cheapie week" are a thing of the past for us :(

Just looking through the hotel reviews and it's amazing how few new reviews there are for Majorca and Greece but loads for Turkey.
Not surprising really; we have just returned from 2 weeks in Nidri, Lefkas and it has put us off going anywhere near the eurozone next year. Prices for breakfast (which my son insists on having) was between 5 and 6.5 euros. So when I took him out for a late breakfast, including a couple of drinks for me and him it was costing between 17 and 20 euros).
For 3 of us our evening meal was usually between 60 and 70 euros. Some of the cafes/resturants on the harbour front were charging 6.5 euros for greek yoghurt and honey, 5 euros for milkshakes and an amazing 7 euros for waffles/ice cream desserts. Large beer between 2.5 and 4 euros (average price was 3 for a large draught Mythos). Cocktails in some bars 7 euros, ouzo was cheap at around 2. G & T usually 4.5. We found it was more expensive to eat out in Nidri than at home. Don't know where we will be heading next year but it definitely won't be Greece. Are these prices unique to Greece or are they the same throughout the eurozone. Final nail in the coffin, 12.5 euros for 2 beers and a bottle of water in the airport.

I do think you have to be careful with Turkey though, it seems very variable from resort to resort. There are tons of reports on how cheap Icmeler is for eating out, but last year (although we were full board) we did eat out a few times and go for drinks outside of our accommodation most evenings and we didnt find Olu Deniz was all that cheap. I think its important to read lots of reviews and hope they mention price if you are on a budget. Cocktails in a nice bar in Turkey could be the equivalent of 7 Euros. Also you would have paid at least as much as that for a drink at Dalaman airport probably more.

Hi doepsmc. I know people rave about how cheap Turkey is but you can't always compare like for like what a family spend in a day or a week. I've heard of English breakfast for the equivalent of a quid and Sunday roasts, other British type food etc for about 3 quid (in Marmaris). Thing is, we don't eat like that on holiday; like to try the local food so our costs would be higher than someone who is happy with the above. Not a criticism, just an observation! Would imagine the Turks know the state of the euro and will have acted accordingly ;) .

just come back from our yeatrly 3 week holiday to Mallroca -Palma NOva / Son Caliu is where we stayed

ate breaky, lunch and dinner out every day, most of the breaky meals cost us around 17 - 23 euros for 4 people ate at Katies in Palma nOva, lunch well we'd grab a roll, water peice of fruit from the little bakers or the grrengrocers and that would come up to around 15-17 euros and our evening meals well the most expensive one was when we ate out at the barbeuce gril place near the SOn MAtias hotel and that was 75 Euros but then there was 6 of us that night i actually think that is quite good, but other meals in thie evebning were costing us between 35 and 45 euros which agian i think is quite good, but then to be honest a few people choose their holiday destination depending on the exchange rate of where they are going whereas i visit places i want to visit not beacuse of the exchange rate

Yes mallorca was more expensive this year but it wouldnt put me off travelling there again

We went to Cala d'Or in August and on average was spending between 50-70 euro on an evening meal for 4 of us tending to stick to the cheaper options on the menu. My Hubby fancied a steak one evening but when we checked out the menu they were charging 18 euro which I find very steep especially when you need to buy drinks on top which are no longer cheap. We provided our own breakfasts and lunch as eating lunch out proved pretty expensive and its difficult when you need to stay in budget. We did get stung one evening when we got charged 8 euro's for 2 cokes and a 5 euro service charge on top of the bill even though we always leave a tip anyway. It does'nt put me off going to Majorca as it is my favourite holiday destination but I will always opt for an aparthotel so at least you have the facilities for brekkie and lunch.

A friend has just come back from Crete, she said the prices were horrific! €3 for a CAN of coke! One place was charging €2.50 for ice creams at the start of the holiday and once the owner realised the kids were buying them, upped them to €3.

By contrast, another friend has returned from Turkey and raved at how cheap it was!

We were paying 2.5 euros for a coke (whether it be bottled, canned or draught). In the supermarkets it was 90 cents.
Why don't they ever have offers like we do at home 15 cans for 3 quid?? We probably won't visit Greece next year mainly because of the euro but also we are ready for a change I think. :think I would still rather pay a bit extra and go to Greece than Turkey though.

In palma Nova the most i paid for a coke at a bar or restuarant and coke in the can was 1.80, but from the supermarkets it varied from 70 cents to 85

but if you look at the proces here is not that much better £1.60 for a little bottle of coke and 65 for a packet of crisps - but if you look aroudn you can stil buy branded packets of crisps for 35pence

and in sainsburys if you are branded stuff its like £1.50 for a loaf of bread

I still think it's cheaper to eat, drink and shop in England! Don't know whether the supermarkets abroad bump their prices up for the tourist but would hate to have to do my weekly shop in some of them :rofl .

Well the thing to do if you possibly can is to shop where the locals do. We usually hire a car at some point, even for a couple of days, and we spend an hour finding and shopping in one of the big hypermarkets that are normally on the outskirts of every town or resort......Cala D'Or has a big one, as does Cala Millor (Lidl!!!!) and Alcudia. We found the prices there a lot cheaper than the "supermarkets" dotted around the centre of the resorts.

Of course thats no good if you are going to be walking and carrying heavy bags in the heat, but its deffo cheaper if you can manage it.

You might say you dont want to do that on your "holidays" but for us on a shoestring on a cheapie week it was a godsend........especially for things like spirits and beer to drink on the balcony of an evening :cheers

I dont think they bump prices up for tourists, or at let they didnt where we were on the mainland, perhaps the islands are different. I used Mercadona in Nerja this summer and it was full of Spanish people. It was a recommendation from on HT and I was told that it is consistently cheaper than SuperSol.

It was still a lot more expensive than the UK though, it started to make me think how do the locals manage as I wouldn't imagine they earn much more than us. :(

Did three shops if memory serves right 60 Euros, 60 Euros and 25 Euros, that was for one week, and we ate out 5 nights as well :yikes Hardly any alcohol, although one night did have a huge amount of gambas and steak. :tup

I can buy enough food for 4 for a week in the supermarket here for about 90 quid. Decent food, not frozen stuff, fresh goods.

I know holidays are different, but it makes me wonder when people moan about it here that sometimes they dont know when they are well off.
