Just looking through the hotel reviews and it's amazing how few new reviews there are for Majorca and Greece but loads for Turkey.
Not surprising really; we have just returned from 2 weeks in Nidri, Lefkas and it has put us off going anywhere near the eurozone next year. Prices for breakfast (which my son insists on having) was between 5 and 6.5 euros. So when I took him out for a late breakfast, including a couple of drinks for me and him it was costing between 17 and 20 euros).
For 3 of us our evening meal was usually between 60 and 70 euros. Some of the cafes/resturants on the harbour front were charging 6.5 euros for greek yoghurt and honey, 5 euros for milkshakes and an amazing 7 euros for waffles/ice cream desserts. Large beer between 2.5 and 4 euros (average price was 3 for a large draught Mythos). Cocktails in some bars 7 euros, ouzo was cheap at around 2. G & T usually 4.5. We found it was more expensive to eat out in Nidri than at home. Don't know where we will be heading next year but it definitely won't be Greece. Are these prices unique to Greece or are they the same throughout the eurozone. Final nail in the coffin, 12.5 euros for 2 beers and a bottle of water in the airport. If anyone does a price comparison for Turkey, could they do it in pounds please .
How about 1.5tl or 60 pence for a pint in Buffalo bar Icmeler/Turkey, Or 5.90 TL or £2.40 for half Chicken on the spit and chips, Breakfast costs 5 to 7 lira £2.20 to £3.00.
Hi rwb46. Thanks for your reply. We have visited loads of places in Greece but found a lot of the people in Nidri not very welcoming (there were, of course, some exceptions). I don't know if it's due to the fact that it was very busy while we were there but that coupled with the prices means we will probably not visit Greece next year. Holidayed in Turkey about 18 years ago but for some reason have never felt the urge to return (even though I remember we had a great time - gulet cruise and then a week in Fethiaye). My friend comes back from Turgutreis (who loves Greece) today so I will wait and see what she has to say.
Turgutreis. is totally differnet to Icmeler its far more expensive, Take my tip and try icmeler for 1 week then lets see what you say.
I will add this, Food is cheaper here and far better quality also, need I say more?
Hi there. What's the difference, in your opinion, between Turgutreis and Icmeler? My friend's partner chose Turgutreis because he thought it wouldn't be too commercialised and cheaper than Greece . Also because of the beach?
i have holidayed in both resorts and prefer icmeler, as rob said turgutreis is more expensive to eat out, icmeler has a better selection of shops, restaurants etc as it seems a bigger resort, i think its more scenic too, the beach in icmeler is shingly in most parts but turgutries was very stoney and it was painful to get in and out of the sea and you needed beach shoes, so for that reason i prefer icmelers beach
If you were to make a comparisomn take Glasgow (turgetereia) to Aberdeen (Icmeler)
:rofl. Sounds like Icmeler if we decide to try Turkey.
Take my advice, if you don't want anywhere too commercialised, steer well clear of Marmaris and stick to Icmeler, Turunc, Dalyan, and Datca.
Also try a day trip to Ephesus, it is a 3 hour coach trip but worth the journey.
And please try the Turkish dishes(lovely) as opposed to chicken & chips!
Yes, do try the Turkish food, was sick of seeing ads for full English breakfasts etc., when the Turkish Dolma and kebabs are so delicious, also they have a lovely range of breads, well worth tasting.
I loved the Turkish food when we were there 18 years ago and I absolutely adore Greek food (saving grace of our holiday in Nidri was a fabulous restaurant called the Ivari). I would never eat 'full english' whilst in Greece but my son loves it. When I say breakfast it's usually around 12.30 so I suppose it's brunch :D.

Please explain the above part about Marmaris being Turkeys answer to Benidorm?
Now after holidaying in both these resorts many times I fail to see what Marmaris has in common with Benidorm, Unless of course it's food and drink.
That's pretty much how I would describe it too, to be honest - or like Turkey's answer to Blackpool. Nothing wrong with that if that's what you're looking for in a holiday - and many people are - but then again, many people don't want somewhere as tacky and "in your face". It's all a case of opinions and "horses for courses" - what suits one person may be another's idea of hell on earth!
In answer to the comparison I made between Benidorm and Marmaris, well, if you have visited both you would not need further explanation - the English pubs, the 'full English breakfast' offered everywhere you look, and the emphasis on booze fuelled recreation.
Surely enough said!!
Why choose Benidorm is my question, I guess you havent tried other resorts in Spain, Cyprus, Portugal, Bulgaria, Every single one of these provide the same culture you spoke about yes English breakfast and booze fuelled recreation.
For your comparison.....
However, I have to say that we had a great time in Sharm, despite it being a bit of a western style carbuncle beside the beautiful red sea, perhaps because we got out and about exploring Egypt, Mount Sinai, Cairo (the pyramids), and the coral reefs in the red sea.
When we stayed in Marmaris we did the same thing, spending a day in Ephesus, and travelling around nearby towns and villages.
If we do return to Turkey will stay nearer Istanbul next time - more to see.
there are loads of places around marmaris area that are lovely, i dont like the commercial side of marmaris but i do like the old town and around the marina area is nice. here are a few places that are great for a day out, cinar restaurant or azmakbasi and nearby ince kum beach, orange beach area, akyaka, selimeye, bozborun ,turunc, icmeler etc, theres plenty more too, it makes a good stopping point for all these gorgeous places ,you can easily avoid the loud side of marmaris and stay at the quieter end .
