Food choices

That would be sad if authentic restaurants were suffering - personally, I don't really see the point of going abroad if you're not going to sample the local cuisine. Turkish food is lovely - far nicer and far more varied than I ever imagined it to be.

The hotels I have stayed in have always offered Turkish choices of food as well as International choices. But when you wander round popular resorts you do see a lot offering Sky Sports on TV, roast dinners, fry ups etc. Not my idea of holiday food, but I guess lots must like it as the tourist industry tends to cater to what tourists seem to want as that is how they make their money.

I always look for the Turkish choices first, even in hotels, although i give the brian soup a miss :really

I personally enjoy trying some of the authentic Turkish dishes whist on holiday, but my daughter is very unadventurous when it comes to food and tends to stick to very plain fayre. My son on the other hand loves to try everything new (including the brain soup) - we love visiting Turkey as we find it caters for all tastes and nobody need go hungry.

It's funny how many people seem to think Turkish food is all kebabs like you'd get in this country and are amazed when you tell them it's actually really varied with lots of regional specialities. Have to agree with ellie_meg too, the casseroles are delicious.

We eat mainly Turkish dishes when on holiday (we eat a lot of Turkish food at home too) and I don't eat roast dinners, English breakfasts, burgers etc either at home or abroad.

Obvioulsy a lot of people do like that stuff though or there wouldn't be so many restaurants catering for that kind of thing. Some people just will not try anything new and just stick to what they know - they don't know what they are missing out on.

I think if you go to a resort dominated by English people you are less likely to find a lot of authentic restaurants, although you will find them, often on the outskirts or in the back streets. If you go to a resort where there are more Turkish visitors though you will get more Turkish restaurants.

Turkish food is lovely, there are so many things to choose from, although I too would give the brain soup a miss :yuck, and although my husband assures me it is very nice, I cannot bring myself to eat raw lamb (cig kofte) :-?

I always eat in authentic Turkish restaurants but last October,on recommendation I tried Sunday lunch at the 3 Bells in Icmeler.
I have never in my life seen Yorkshire puddings as big and the hotel/restaurant is owned by a lovely Korean couple. :que

When we go somewhere new in Turkey we always try and hunt out the little back street restaurants, that are frequented by locals. We too would avoid resorts where every other restaurant serves roast dinners, fry-ups etc.

We sometimes ask what the waiter/waitress recommends and tell them we would like authentic Turkish food. As was said earlier some of the casseroles are delicious. We prefer to have rice rather than chips, and enjoy the rice that has small pieces of pasta in it.

There is one small pancake house that we had often walked past in Turunc which looked nice. Earlier this year we noticed it had a board offering casserole with 4 hours notice, so we ordered it for the evening. It was one of our best meals of the holiday, and probably the cheapest!

We always ask for rice instead of chips too, especially for the children as they always seem to put chips with everything for children in restaurants unless you ask them not to. I guess that must be another pampering to English ways :que

My son loves the way they cook the rice in Turkey - he'd much rather eat that than the chips any day. We find most restaurants are really accommodating though, and even if you don't see something on the menu, they're usually happy to prepare it for you.

We do that a lot for the girls too and when they were babies we would always get them to make something up for them.

we're off to marmaris on saturday, Can anyone recommend where we can get some street food. Nothing posh, just a grill and an efes will do me!
