We are travelling to Goa on the 12th December for two weeks.
We have never spent Christmas away from home and wanted to experience Goa at this time, if only for the one time. Is Goa popular with people from the UK at Christmas or do most people like to have their Goa holiday just before or after Christmas?
I think what I am really asking is what is Christmas like in Goa and will I miss the big fat bird with all the trimmings?!! My other half would say that he is taking the big fat bird with him - cheek!
Midnight Mass Xmas Day services etc at the churches
Most hotels have a gala dinner on and you will find xmas dinner if thats what you want at a lot of the restaurants. Its not the same as xmas at home but lying on a hot beach on xmas day knowing everyone at home is stressing over hot ovens etc is great.
Personally I would never have another xmas at home.
It seems odd that usually at this time of year we buy things for Christmas (chocolates, biscuits, wine etc.), and today when we were in Tesco there were several times when I automatically went to grab something for Christmas having forgotten we won't be here.
We have had to pay for the gala meal at the hotel, but we still don't know whether it is to be on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but I expect they will tell us when we get there.
If I remember rightly they usually hold them on xmas eve in the hotels though I could be wrong. We are flying xmas day this year so will miss it competely but its a small price to pay to get there. You could always take some mince pies or something with you....they taste great with a large honeybee
all the hotels hold there gala dinner on different days so it maybe 24Th or 25Th we have had them both dates
but i always go out now its more fun only ever done the gala dinner twice but as its always in the price so have to pay anyway
I forgot to say that usually the beach shacks have buffets and fireworks etc on xmas eve. I think it was cancelled last year due to the security issues but they were on on new years eve so I presume they will be back to normal this year.
Xmas abroad in a hot country is one of the best ways to spend that horribly cold time of the year.
My family did it last year. The flew to Goa. As far as I remember they seemed very please with what
they saw and with the hotel they stayed in. I think they picked one of the luxury hotels online.
I bet anyone would enjoy fabulous weather away from European chill :/
that's what I want for Xmas
We are going to Goa on 12th December till the 7th January - we can't wait. Christmas and New Year in the sun. We have done it once before about 5 years ago and it was fantastic.
Christmas in Goa is different, but great. As there is a large local Christian population who attend church often, you do get a good atmosphere at Christmas. The hotels and restaurants do Chistmas meals and a buffet may be included with your Christmas accomodation. One Christmas I had been to the cinema in Panjim on Christmas Eve and when I came out there was those most beautiful carol being sung from a church which was nearby. I sat down and listened to it for 20 minutes or so, then thought well I wouldn't be doing or listening to this at home and it's something I will never forget.
I have never been at Christmas but I watched one of those "Goa holiday promo" progs years back and they showed a Goan church choir singing in some church or other, the acoustics were great and the choir sounded brilliant and listening to it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, I guess this is probably how you felt to

But, yes that was how I felt, it was very very beautiful with all the singing in tune.
If you are here for New Year its highly recommended to head on down to the beach for midnight. We live in Baga so always go that side but each shack along the beach sets off fireworks and the view is absolutely spectacular.
Personally I would never have another xmas at home./quote]
With a wife who works in Retail going away at Christmas is a no no for us.But every year I dream of nothing else but getting away from the hell that Christmas is in England.
Papa
Was wondering if you have to book or christmas evening (dinner)??. I have never been over Christmas so have never had to book to eat anywhere before. But guessing it will be really busy. Do they charge more for taxi's like they do back home??
I don't know whether you are on a package holiday or DIY. If you are on a package you will find that most hotels do a gala evening on Christmas Eve or Christmas Night and another gala evening on New Years Eve. Both of these gala dinners are usually included in the price of your package and although they are included check with your hotel as you may need to book a table.
If you don't mind where you eat there will be no need to book, even if you have to wait for a little you will get a table but if you want to eat at a particular restaurant it may be better to book, although last year it was not so busy.
The taxis do try to charge more over the Christmas/New Year period. In fact in our experience they did try to charge extortionate charges, we were told it would cost 500rupees for a journey that would normally cost 100 rupees we just walked away from them and said we would walk. They will then agree a price with you. But to avoid any misunderstanding it's always better to agree a price before you get in the taxi.
Been to Goa 7 times but only once over Christmas, prefer Goa at any other time as it is far too busy, full of drunken Indians and the traffic is horrendous. Do not attempt to drive anywhere on Christmas or New Years Eve.
We spent Christmas in Goa in 2007 and it was fantastic, dinner on the beach on Christmas Eve and at midnight the whole beach erupted with fireworks as far as the eye could see and carols ringing out it felt a bit surreal. The beach was very crowded and taxis were more expensive on Christmas Eve and the roads were very congested, but the atmosphere was brilliant. If you want a traditional Christmas dinner Bernards (CSM Road) do a very good one but you need to book it, also some of the shacks do turkey buffets. We just went to our normal shack.
We had our first Xmas and New Year in Goa last year. Our hotel didn't do Xmas dinner or new years eve dinner. We did book for Xmas dinner at Souymens and it was full but didn't need to book for new years eve, we ate late anyway and then went down to the beach for midnight to our usual shack where we had a fantastic time. Our taxi driver didn't charge us any extra for Xmas and new year although he said it was much quieter last year. probably due to the bomb threats, and he doesn't usually work anyway as he can't do with all the traffic.
The Christmas and New Year eve is celebrated with much fun and recreation in Goa. A large number of domestic and international tourists flock to the beaches of Goa during the Christmas festival to watch Goa at its cultural best. Also you can enjoy the best of Goan music and dance during Christmas
