you may do best then looking at.. the western Algarve, or possibly the silver coast, or even the Azores
the Azores sounds romantic..... have been googling the old town in albuveria - hope I spelt that right - and looks promising
Alberfura is a nice town now the work is finished but it will be very busy in august
Beginning of August - the height of the tourist season - Albufeira will be the busiest place on the Algarve. Nice as the Old Town is, quiet will not be the word for it. Wizard's advice to go West will stand you in good stead if it's peace and quiet you seek. Resorts such as Budens or Salema- virtually on the beach, and barely touristy at all ,may be more your cup of tea.
Cheers Sagres - sounds like good advice. Have just gotten so used to the peace of out of season hols think I've gotten spoiled!! Will check out your ideas
An afterthought - look at Burgau in the same area for a similar holiday - on the beach, quiet and mostly untouched by mass tourism.
We've stayed, and are going there again this year, in Salema. It's a very small resort with a beautiful beach, just a couple of bars and about 8 restaurants. Not a nightclub in sight. It's handy for Lagos (bus runs between the 2 if you don't have a car) and Burgau isn't far away either.
