In Goa you can get cashew or palm fenni whereas I only came across palm toddy in Kerala , and in fact the Toddy Palm is the name given to a variety of palms you can use to make it.
We were on a riceboat trip and our guide offered to fetch some from a local seller for us to try. We asked if we could go too and he agreed but said it was unusual to see women in such places, a very dim but candle lit drinking den. The girls thought it was brilliant because, for a change, the waiters were topless ! We tried it accompanied by a savoury semolina dish and I'm not sure which was the most unpleasant ! Great experience though and the cost was minute.
Incidentally, if you haven't tried it Fenni is quite nice when served mixed with lime and lemonade. It's quite moreish but stick at one. Trust me !
