I've been to Olu Deniz several times and loved it....especially the first time in 1995, it was so slow and laid back. I've noticed an awful lot of changes since then as it's grown rapidly as has Hisaranou at the top of the hill.
I decided to try Gumbet for the first time last October, I really liked it, I chose my hotel very carefully as I always do and couldn't have asked for better. So much so that I'm returning to Gumbet twice this year and have booked already for June & October and at the same hotel as 2009. I can see the differences between Olu & Gumbet and I loved the fact we could get out & about and visit lots of other resorts from Gumbet without too much trouble. Bodrum on the doorstep for a change and Bitez for a better beach.
I can't understand the "dump" comment, what constitutes a "dump" anyway ?? You really need to justify that comment I think. Okay I found some of the shopkeepers a little keen shall we say and a polite no thanks usually did the trick and when it didn't we just ignored it completely. You get this everywhere in Turkey in my experience and as long as you shrug it off all's fine. I also usually travel with friends as an all female group and again we didn't get any hassle over and above the norm in Gumbet, we ate very well, drank very well, had some fabulous day trips and a fantastic hotel and can't wait to return 15 weeks time
I intend to try Icmeler next year as it's also been recommended and we were torn between there and Gumbet when looking to book in 2009.
It is obvious that Gumbet has a huge "fan club" so that speaks for itself.
Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinions but it would be more helpful to give the facts of why you don't like somewhere rather than just giving unhelpful comments like "it was a dump" which are not actually true.
Gumbet and Icmeler are both nice resorts and lots of people love each of them. Lots of people love both of them too.
Anyway Rover has already booked his holiday and I'm sure he will have great time there when he goes
I didnt like the place and wouldnt return free but I wouldnt call it a dump.
Side used to be my favourite resort until I returned to Icmeler after an absence of a few years and love the place.
I go every October but last May went to Gumbet and loved it apart from the loud music at 3am
I am returning in 6 weeks and intend travelling around the Bodrum peninsular.
Its a good job we dont all like the same resort
As for being insulted, I will explain how this came about. My daughter, Grand Daughter and I entered a shop to have a look around. The staff in the shop were eating their dinner/tea on passing them one of the shop assistants asked my daughter if she would like some of what he was eating, She politely refused and he told her she didn't need it anyway as she was fat enough.
I politely told him that was not a very nice thing to say to anyone and he told me I should go back to Ireland (I am not Irish but Scottish)
I could go on but feel that this is enough information to explain why I made the remarks about Gumbet that I made; I have been going to Turkey now for twenty years and never had this experience in any other resort. Before anyone says that, you cannot tar them all the same I'm not but I have never found Turkish people to be anything other than pleasant and nice in other resorts.
So my opinion of Gumbet remains the same and I would never go back not even if I won a free holiday to the place.
There is no need for any shopkeepers to insult tourists as if it wasnt for us their wouldnt make a living.
I dont know if you can remember the shop and I will avoid it when I go in May.
No sorry I cannot remember . But little did the shop assistant know that the girl he insulted is a top travel agent in Northern Ireland, I'm sure she would recommend other resorts before she recommends Gumbet, Although I can honestly say it did not put any of us off going to Turkey,We have been many times after this and will continue to go to Turkey as we love it
Just as an aside, we have to remember that Turkish people have a different culture to us. The offering of food is very important to them and even if just a little is accepted, then - oh I'm finding this difficult to explain (I must be tired)!! Turks are quite hospitable, and offering food, drink, gum, sweets, etc is an important part of Turkish hospitality. Maybe there was some misunderstanding of your daughter's polite refusal?
Anyway, I think that we should agree to disagree. For every person who has something bad to say about Gumbet, there will be hundreds who will praise it. And this applies equally to Icmeler, Marmaris and all other Turkish resorts.
JAK xx
I agree with you totally about everyone having his or her opinion, but just one point I would like to make. If it had been a tea/coffee sweets or gum I would have understood, but a fork full of food he was eating of a plate was stuck in her face with "here you want some of this" to which she replied no thank you. Misunderstanding no just plain rudeness
Gumbet is actually going through a facelift at the moment so some of the parts you describe as being run down will probaly look a lot smarter this year.
Can we all remember this site is called holiday truths lets tell the truth good or bad .Lots of us a been going to turkey 20 plus years that speaks volumes for turkey,And let get one thing straight nobody's critising the turkish people(who i have found to be one of the most hospitable in the world)They have no control over the shop keepers bar owners boat hustlers the the quality of the beach or sea water. Most of the people who do cause the problems are only in Gumbet for the season, just like us tourists.
So one rude shopkeeper makes a whole town a dump... In that case Belfast must be mega-dump city... but i wouldn't let a rude shopkeeper taint my views on an otherwise superb place...
I refuse to get into a slanging match about this subject, what I said was my opinion and it doesn't change, as for Belfast sorry but I wouldn't know
sorry neither of theese places have struck me as traditionally turkish they are first and foremost resorts.dalyan is still quaintish and kalkan isnt to tacky.icmeler is a stunning place but over the years it has been going downhill at an alarming rate, gumbet is not all that pretty shame really because here too there is great potential, out of the two icmeler is nicer but they are pretty much the same cha cha slide, kiss kiss, boys dancing on bars topless etc etc etc
>yalikavak also is stunning and still has charm, along with gocek .It all depends on what you require from aholiday if you like young skinny boys chatting you up,entertainment that hasnt changed for ten years and is the same night after night after night, and finally and most importantly are an ardent michael jackson fan then icmeler is the place for you,if you want a quieter holiday in nice surroundings that havent been totally ruined by tourism then try kalkan, dalyan, kas, yalikavak or even olu deniz at a pinch, but not icmeler or gumbet .IN gumbets favour though i will say there are more places to visit nearby, icmeler only really has marmaris and orhanye/Bozburum nearby and bozburum is at least an hours drive away, gumbet has a lot of little places round about you can get to on the dolmus
