You can yes, I went years ago and I think it took about 1.5 hours - 2 hours! I don't think the buses are that frequent though!

Think you'll find things have improved now. There are buses every hour, scheduled to take an hour or so, but tend to take less. Not sure on prices now as they change each year, but a couple of summers back it cost 4.50 one way from Alcudia. Very reasonable and probably a deal on return tickets as well. There are also excursions such as the No Frills day in Palma - Cathedral, shops etc.
