Hi there,

Where abouts will you be staying? Most places have supermarkets and many things are reasonably priced although we usually opt for cobs, butter, jam and take our own teabags, coffee and sugar.

Despite Greece's recent financial problems it (inc. Crete) is part of the EU like we are. The advantage in recent years is that the supermarkets now have an international feel (Carrefour, Champion etc) and even the local INKA supermarkets do too. So you can buy all the things that some Brits seem not to be able to do without when they leave our shores, eggs & bacon, tea and so on, especially in the Brit dominated areas to the east of Heraklion. The cost is not so different from the UK. Even if you save 50p by taking your own items with you you'll have blown that saving on the first round of drinks. Beer is now notably more expensive than in England, especially in the bars where 5-6 euros (say £5.00) a pint is not uncommon. Cocktails are cheaper but the quality is terrible. Try finding a bar that can mix the most famous cocktail of all, a good Dry Martini - no chance.
The solution? Try immersing yourself in Cretan culture and cuisine. It's healthier, tastier and far, far cheaper. It's one of the reasons I go to Crete. Western Crete offers countless other reasons too!
