In the recent TV Book Club run on C4 & More 4, part of each programme revisted a previous author who had found success due to being featured in earlier series. In the last episode, no 10, they talked to Victoria Hislop.

She was interviewed actually on the island itself where Greek TV are making what she refers to as the biggest series they've ever made (I think it's something like 26 parts) and for those who've not been there you can see a little of the structure. The boat she boards in one on the shortest trip from Plaka. The programme is still available for another 15 days on 4 On Demand (moderator, hope that doesn't infringe the rights on here) and the 3 minute section starts about 5 minutes in. Hope you enjoy it.

There has been much talk on my visits out there that a film is being or even from some people has been made. The claims last year were that it was being filmed somewhere up near Rethymno as they couldn't use the actual site. But this seems to be more conjecture than fact.

Hope that's of interest.

Further to the information I posted earlier I've received this from our neighbours in Crete

"I have a bit of news you may be interested in. I'm not sure if I have already told you but there is a T.V. Series being produced from Victoria Hislop's book "The Island" which is about "Spinalonga " & the Leper Colony that was there up until 1957. John and I have parts in it as a couple of Lepers. The makeup artists are fantastic! We get paid and fed. It is going to be a 12 part series and there is another eight months filming to do yet. It is a wonderful experience."

I've asked them for some more details as I'm not sure if this is the Greek version or not (they are English). When I hear something I will post what they tell me.

just read your thread re- the filming on Spinalonga. Interested to hear more when you have any news. I have visited the island twice and it has such a feel about it that I can't explain.

yes it would be really interesting. Have to admit that visiting Spinalonga made a big impact on me as well. I could almost sense people from the past watching us. Strange feeling but a nice one.

Hi suemog & Linda

Yes I do have some further details as I got back from Crete just over a week ago.

My neighbours in Kalo Horio, which is the other side of Ag Nik to Elounda/Plaka are among a group of about 20 or so (it may be a few more) ex pats from the same area who are working as extras on what is the Greek TV version of The Island. I presume therefore it is the one featured in the TV Book Club.

They get paid about 35€ as day & are playing anything from lepers to soldiers of varying nationalities. John & Rita are both playing lepers & have to be made up pretty well, however neither of them are very Greek looking which I found strange. But, I believe posters were put up to ask for Greek extras & they didn't get much of a take up so this group of ex pats have been doing it.

Filming was done on Spinalonga itself in the winter, but had to stop there when the tourist season started. Recently there has apparently been a very impressive looking set which was built at Plaka but that had been taken away just before I got there. Internal hosptial scenes have been filmed at an unused school building the other side of Vrouhas, which is up on the hills to the north of Plaka & the latest set has just been built up in Pano Elounda (Upper Elounda), but I didn't have time to get up there.

There is a Times article below which explains why there won't be a Hollywood blockbuster as many rumours have suggested.

(Mods: if that infringes site rules please delete).

In a slightly sad note. One of the people that Victoria Hislop used as a source for her book was a man who had been on the island as a leper. He was I believe quite old & had also been included briefly in the series being pushed around in a wheelchair by Victoria herself. Regrettably he died about a month ago so won't see the finished result.

Hope that is of interest & when I hear some more I'll let you know.

thanks for that - I am going to Crete in October so may do a bit of digging myself.
Hope it's as good as the book when it's done......

Just a quick update for those of you who were interested in the progress of the filming for the Greek TV series of "The Island".

The series is due to be shown on MEGA, the Greek channel, starting sometime in October. There are short trailers being shown at the moment apparently & a number of them are available on a popular video site (in Greek obviously!) that this forum doesn't allow, but you may be able to work out what it is. I have seen the links posted on some other sites but as I'm always wary about offending site rules I won't put them here.
