We are thinking of visiting Crete for the first time with our two children this August (ages 6 and 16 months)
We are looking for a village type resort, where we can mix with locals, eat traditional greek food in tavernas and use as a base for exploring the history of the island and find small sandy coves for snorkelling etc.
We don't want however to be in a resort typcial of the 'brits abroad' type place (ie full of neon bars, sunday roast, fish and chips and football on large screens).
We would be planning on hiring a car for the full two weeks and renting an apartment or cottage / villa direct etc.
Where would you suggest?
You'll then encounter the best that the island has to offer both in terms of natural beauty and other activities. You'll also avoid the "Brits abroad" scenario. I recommend you visit

Good luck.
Last time we were in Crete we took a drive over to Rethymnon for the day and found a lovely little village based around a small cove with a a few tavernas etc - I think it was called Panorama or Panormos - not "eenglish pub bar" type place. The western side of Crete is much less touristy than the East but has some lovely beaches - as well as secluded coves. Definately fly into Chania as its less of a drive and the airport tends to be a lot less hectic than Heraklion.
