I no longer smoke, but when I did I smoked menthols and had no problem getting them in Turkey - although I had to smoke the local brands and they can be a bit harsh. If you smoke a particular brand you are better off taking some with you.

I have heard that the smoking ban is now in place. Whether anyone pays any attention to it is another matter. It'll be interesting to find out.

the smoking ban is in place but only in enclosed bars if it is open air bars like most then you are fine ,
as the menthol ciggi's you can get marlborough menthol, salem, meltin (course) west ice (spearmint ) wife likes them
or as mentioned before your departure airport or if arriving into dalaman the duty free on arrival berkley menthol superking menthol
do not buy ciggi's off the black market these are dangerious as they are very high in toxins (metals )
hope this is of some help

The smoking ban is strictly enforced in Turkey. Smoking is no longer permitted in public buildings, education and health institutions, culture and sports areas, transportation vehicles, restaurants, coffeehouses and cafeterias. Those found guilty of an offense will be fined 69 YTL (the last time I saw) and if the owner of the establishment is found not to have banned smoking, 560 YTL. You are permitted to smoke in designated smoking areas which often includes uncovered areas in bars and restaurants.

Well there you go then. Most bars have an outside space though - I very rarely sit inside.

Salem was the brand I smoked there, thanks for the reminder Maverick!

No smoking in bars and restaurants is enforced. The law is not always interpreted by the officials in the same way.

To be sure of the situation just ask the bar staff in any establÅŸishment you visit.

I always asked before i went into a restaurant and was without exception told you can smoke where you like. We always went outside i suppose because we are used to it. But we both smoke and it was never a problem.

We stayed in Icmeler last September, there was only one restaurant that enforced the smoking ban although they have a website and through the winter I have seen them smoking inside!,everywhere else just said sit where you like when I asked for non smoking area!!They all had no smoking signs up !!

Perhaps that might change though - especially if people become aware of the new restrictions and start complaining that bars and restaurants aren't enforcing them?

Why can't people just go outside for a smoke, rather than make the rest of the restaurant/bar put up with passive smoking.

Yes i agree that people do have a choice to smoke, no one can stop them. But what about people who do not smoke? Surely they have a choice not to passive smoke?

Its even worse when i'm sat in a restaurant eating my meal with my young child, and someone decides to light up.

Read Dazbo's post ,smoking is ilegal in all public places in turkey now and the authorities are clamping down on it ,just because the waiters or owners of bars may allow it does not make it any less legal ,if caught you will still be subject to the fine ,which can make it a dear smoke.

I hope that means the staff in the Loveboat in Icmeler will stop smoking!
Last October one of the waiters and the big girl who operates the till often shared a cigarette at the till and just inside the kitchen. :que

Like I say, maybe people have to make their voices heard and complain. If places think they're going to lose money because of it, they might think twice about enforcing the new rules.

The customers werent allowed to smoke once they put the side windows in at the end of October but the staff did.
The man on reception went mad when someone told him.

The fact is, smoking in public places is against the law.

Wether people or establishments allow or disallow smoking is another issue.
