I'm just watching a tv programme where they are with the border patrol at Manchester Airport, sniffer dogs checking for illegally imported meats etc...
They have just taken some sealed tins of cheese and jars, and more vacuum packed cheese all sealed by manufacturers (ie not from a market and wrapped themselves) all of it confiscated and a warning given.
This is done to protect the UK's food chain, not introducing and potential problems with virus/bacteria/disease that these items might carry.
Baring all this in mind how come I've seen Cheese, Sausages and I think sliced meat on sale around the "duty free" shopping in Larnaka airport ?
Does it not count because its all part of the EU ? If so does that mean all countries of the EU are exempt and don't have different diseases etc than any other country in the EU ?
If it is because its the EU, then what happens when another country joins the EU ? Do they have to sanitise the entire Country in one night to bring it upto spec ?
Steve
Food coming into the UK from other European Union (EU) Member States is not officially an import. It is subject to free movement of trade between EU countries and not subject to routine checks at UK ports.

OK slight variation here WHY? do they not like you bringing in food via the ferry ports to the UK doesn't matter which EU country you bought it in if they search and find it they confiscate it
we are talking
meats - cooked and raw
cheeses
and despite not supposing to have limits there are now limits on wine, beer, sparkling wine, and spirits
From the mumbles I have heard is that it's something to do with UK taxes not getting income
I do hope that when we go to Cyprus I can find something to bring home that is exciting to eat as I love my food (there back on topic )
Hi has anyone brought back sheftlia (cant spell sorry - cypriot sausage?) either in their hand or hold luggage? did you have a problems doing so? thanks
