Mexico - advise

Hi Jenny

We were in Mexico last September albeit the end of September.

We stayed at the Grand Riviera Princess (Thomson Platinum Hotel) in Riviera Maya approx 45mins from Cancun. This hotel is quite large (Quite a bit of walking) half of which was closed while we were there as they said it was due to the Americans who don't go very often in September. (This gives them time for refurbs etc) We loved this hotel and would certainly go back again.

I cannot help as far as Scuba diving goes as we are not into that and I would be very surprised if there wasn't, but a lot of people were certainly going snorkeling.

The weather was fantastic we only had a couple of days where it rained and this was only for about 2 mins at a time. You can walk the beach for miles, I know we did but we like that.

I am sure it wouldn't matter where you stayed in Mexico you would have a great time. I know we did.

Like you say there are so many hotels to choose from so I am sure you will find somthing to suit :tup

I'd recommend the Excellence Riviera Cancun (actually Peurto Morelos). It's a 5* resort away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun with only 440 rooms. It's a bit dearer but pure luxury and offers 8 restaurants, 6 pools and 12 bars. There's an AquaWorld (AW)booth on site where you can arrange dives but, as Peurto Morelos is just a few miles away, you'd be better of going there and organising your dives, as AW are quite expensive. I also understand that AW diives are off Cancun but the reef off Peurto Morelos is far better. Why not Google Peurto Morelos to find dive agents and charges.

Lots of people will recommend hotels which they have been to and had a good time, which is perfectly natural. There are many excellent hotels in Mexico and most of the top hotels will offer scuba diving. Having been to both Cancun and Playacar, I prefer Playacar as it is quieter but only a short walk from the town of Playa del Carmen. We stayed at the Riu Tequila in Playacar and could not really fault it.
I would advise you to have a look at the hotel reviews on both this site and also on http://www.tripadvisor.com (sorry Mods ;) ) and read through some of the reviews to make your decision based on what kind of holiday you want besides scuba diving. Also use Google maps to find the actual hotel location as a lot of hotels on the Yucatan peninsular are in the middle of nowhere (which isn't a problem if you intend to stay on resort, but could be if you like "exploring" on a regular basis).

September weather will be very hot but, as it is in the rainy season, expect some heavy showers during the afternoon. Don't worry about this, they are very heavy, but normally very short and within an hour or so you cannot even tell it has rained.

Mexico is very safe to walk out in and the people are very friendly. We went off the beaten track many times in Playa del Carmen with no problems.

Cheers

Keith
