Whenever we've been abroad, we've also cashed our sterling travellers cheques at the hotel? Do they offer a lot lower rate than places in town?
Exchange rates are usually lower at hotels, Helen. As well as lower rates, you would also need to be wary of any fees or commission charges. In some cases the difference in the exchange rate may only be marginal, in others it could be substantial, but you wouldn't really know for sure unless you shop around and compare what's on offer at local exchange bureaux. As you are staying at the Flamingo Oasis, you may find rates at the indoor market worth checking out.
Thanks for the advice David. I'll definitely head for the indoor market to exchange any cheques. Saying that though, we went to Benidorm in 1999 but I can't recall seeing an indoor market! Is it rather easy to find? Many thanks, Helen
It's very easy Helen, just a short walk down the road from your hotel towards the beach, on the same side of the street as the hotel.
Thats great David! Thank you
Where did you stay in '99, was it not that end of town ?
We stayed at hotel Ruidor in 1999. Never saw the indoor market though!

You are very welcome. That`s what we are here for, anything else just ask we do our best.
HELP please!!!! I've just been to the Post office to get my Sterling Travellers cheques and I've come back out without them!! I'm most confused! I've always got Sterling Travellers cheques, having being advised in the past to avoid euro travellers cheques. Well the man in the P/O has just asked which I wanted and then went on to try and convince me to get euro ones......he also stated that I'll be charged 1.5% fee on the sterling ones and nothing on the euro ones. He also said I'd be charged commission when I cash them in on holiday but wouldn't on the euro ones........I really think he's conning me....Surely he would know what's best? He was really putting pressure on me to get the euro ones and made me feel a bit thick to be honest!
I always get my travellers cheques from my bank, and don't get charged for buying them, or when I cash them in on return either. Eurotabac exchange have never charged me for cashing sterling cheques, and I don't think Sheila's in the indoor market do either. HTH.
Thank you!
I've been really upset about it - being tired and stressed doesn't help :S
I'm still curious about his motives? He was clearly trying to pressure me into the euro ones. He'd more than likely gain something this way?
Thanks again
Helen
I would never consider euro cheques as the rate is always better over there, but that's just my opinion. I would stick out and get Sterling cheques. Have a good holiday! (And I hope the rate keeps going up) WWAS.
Of course, you'd have to be lucky enough to have some left!
Hi Helen ... I agree with Linda. On page 1 of this topic, I have given my personal opinion as to why I feel Euro Travellers Cheques are best avoided.
Thanks very much for your replies WWAS and David
Hi Helen, you did the right thing getting them in Sterling. All you have to do now is enjoy your holiday!
